A few years ago it was basically unheard of celebrities dealing with cancer. Michael Douglas’s cancer showed that not even Hollywood royalty is safe against it. Ever since then, more and more celebrities shared their diagnosis with their fans, raising awareness for the particular condition. Tommy Chong announced he was diagnosed with prostate cancer about a month ago.
Although when it comes to Tommy Chong it’s easy to understand that the focus is on supporting the legalization of marijuana, his diagnosis for prostate cancer is not to overlook. In fact, as the man himself tries, marijuana is seen as an alternative to damaging treatments for cancer. This Saturday, on CNN, Tommy Chong announced he was diagnosed with prostate cancer about a month ago, but he has been noticing the symptoms over the past eight years!
Tommy Chong, one of the comedians behind “Cheech and Chong”, had an interview with CNN’s Don Lemon in favor of the legalization of marijuana. During the interview, Tommy Chong revealed he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and his treatment is based on hemp oil and cannabis. “So [legalizing marijuana] means a lot more to me than just being able to smoke a joint without being arrested” concluded Chong.
The 74-year-old comedian explained that for him cannabis is a cure. He is a longtime support of the drug’s legalization which he thinks it’s going to aid people like him. Tommy Chong added that he’s not interested in smoking marijuana for health reasons, however to treat his prostate cancer he does take in hemp oil “at night, so I won’t be woozy all day”. “I’m taking it as medicine” said Chong.
There are a lot of people looking at marijuana as a great treatment for prostate cancer, and not only. Researchers showed that the active components in the marijuana plant, the cannabinoids are effective in regressing tumors and reducing inflammation.
In fact, a study published in 2009 in the British Journal of Cancer showed that the cannabinoids are effective in stopping prostate cancer cells. The research was based on two particular cannabinoids, methanandamide and JWH – 015, which stopped cancer cells from spreading.
