Taco Bell’s Doritos Locos Tacos Sold 100 Million

When it comes to the fast food industry, the affordability and accessibility make it very easy for the companies in the game to make big money. However, when it comes to the fast food product that sold most, Taco Bell seems to take the lead, ahead of McDonald’s or Burger King. According to the company, their Doritos Locos Tacos sold 100 million, breaking sales record.

Taco Bell belongs to the Yum!Brands, a chain that also owns KFC and Pizza Hut. In the United States, pizza and chicken nuggets tend to be on top of the favorite products list when it comes to fast food. Burgers had the No. 1 status and enjoyed a sales breaking record back in 1958, when McDonald’s sold its first 100 million hamburgers.

For the moment being, Taco Bell’s Doritos Locos Tacos sold so well the product has become the best selling fast food item and sold 100 million within 10 weeks. The product debuted March 8 and it was promoted to be a sort of revamped taco with a shell made from Doritos cheese nacho. It costs $1.29 and it contains seasoned beef, tomatoes and lettuce, all in a Doritos holster.

Rob Poetsch, spokesman for Taco Bell, said that the company’s previous most successful product Crunchwrap “has been dethroned” by the new addition to the menu, the Doritos Locos Tacos. The Crunchwrap debuted in Taco Bell’s menus back in 2005 and its tostada holster stuffed with nacho cheese sauce and sour cream over seasoned beef became a success soon after its launch.

According to Taco Bell, the Doritos Locos Tacos sold 100 million in only 10 weeks. It is quite an important step forward for the company as it tries to secure market share in quite a dog-eat-dog industry. As Taco Bell CEO Greg Creed once referred to the new taco, it is a “flavor pairing just waiting to happen”.

Apparently the Doritos Locos Tacos inspired other companies in the industry. A report from Nashville says the local branch of Subway has released a Doritos nachos based product too. Bloggers write that the product could really be a hit, if the company lets customers customize it.

All in all, at least before the novelty wears off, for Taco Bell the Doritos Locos Tacos are a success. The company is already preparing new versions of the product, with varied shell flavors.
