National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Failed to Demand Recall

The case involving General Motors seems to become more complicated each day. Now, it has been claimed that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has failed to demand recall of the vehicles with fatal problem. 

It has been said that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration actually knew about this issue much sooner, but they failed to react and ask General Motors to recall all the vehicles with ignition switches problem. 

Moreover, reports reveal that the NHTSA knew about the issue since 2007. Joan Claybrook, a popular activist on this case, says that what NHTSA did actually was breaking the law, as they should have asked General Motors to solve the issue years ago. 

The fatal ignition switches problem has already been linked to no less than 31 car crashes, as well as 13 deaths. To solve the problem traced in their vehicles, General Motors has recalled no less than 1.6 million cars in the United States. The recalled vehicles include the 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, the 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR, the 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, the 2007 Pontiac G5, as well as the 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky. 

New York Times conducted an investigation which reached the conclusion that the NHTSA actually received more than 260 complaints in the past 11 years involving vehicles produced by General Motors. However, despite the great number of complaints, they did nothing to investigate the problem. 

Until now, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has responded nothing to the claims and accusations that have been made. However, the administration decided to give a response to the investigation that the New York Times conducted. NHTSA said that they recalled more than 55 million cars in the last 7 years. 

The ignition switches problem makes the car to just stop, as the engine shuts down while driving, with absolutely no warning. If this occurs at high speeds or on the highway, as well as in many other situations, it can easily lead to fatal accidents. The recall that General Motors is conducting now aims to solve the ignition fault problem. This means that now for GM starts a very difficult task: to actually fix the cars.
