Mary Tyler Moore Undergoes Tumor Removal Surgery

The actress Mary Tyler Moore is having a difficult time these days as she needs to undergo a medical procedure of removing a tumor located near the brain. Moore’s representative, Alla Plotkin, told People magazine of the surgery, but did not say when is it going to take place.

Mary Tyler Moore is now 74 years old and has been diagnosed with meningioma, a slow growing tumor in the meninges, a membrane that covers and protects the brain and the spinal cord. Meningiomas can occur in older people, but they are usually benign.

Plotkin said in the statement that the actress “went in for an elective surgery to remove a meningioma” and added that the tumor is benign and it is not, as many believe, a “brain tumor” as it is not located in the brain, but in the membrane that covers the brain. Plotkin stated that Moore made the choice at the recommendation of her neurologist. He has been monitoring her in the past few years. In addition, she was consulted by a neurosurgeon, who advised her to consider surgery as it is the best choice.

Moore debuted in show business in 1958, where she played a mysterious receptionist in the TV series Richard Diamond, Private Detective. She became famous for the housewife role in the ‘60s comedy series, “The Dick Van Dyke Show”. Then she gained more audience with her own show, “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”, which ran in the ‘70s. She also played in a number of movies, including “Ordinary People” in 1980, Six Weeks in 1982, Just Between friends in 1986, Flirting With Disaster and Blue Arrow in 1996, Keys To Tulsa in 1997 and Cheats in 2002.

Mary Tyler Moore’s personal life is a full agitated one. She got married for the first time when she was only 18 and an 19 years old she became mother for her only child, Richard Jr. She filed for a divorce in 1961 and one year later she married an NBC producer. Together they started MTM Enterprises which produced her show “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”. In 1980, her son accidentally shot himself in the head and died. In 1983 she married Dr. Robert Levine which remained by her side up to this moment. She was involved in charity work, as well.
