There’s really no better way to get the whole world looking at your cause than to have a celebrity take part at a protest. If they get arrested it’s even better for media coverage. George Clooney proved that a few months ago but Lucy Lawless did that before him. Lucy Lawless decided to plead guilty in February’s trespass arrest.
Most of us remember Lucy Lawless as the feisty and wise Xena, the warrior princess. Even with her renouncing the racy leather clothes and kicking bad guys’ asses, Lucy Lawless remains a fighter in the real world. She is one of the most dedicated eco activists at Hollywood. In fact to raise awareness for oil-drilling on behalf of Greenpeace, back in February the actress joined activists in their attempt to prevent a specialized ship from leaving the port.
On Thursday, Lucy Lawless was due in court. She decided to plead guilty in the February trespass arrest and told reporters with the Associated Press: “For the first time in my life, I put my body and reputation on the line to stand up for my beliefs and do the right thing. I hope I’ve encouraged other people to do the same”.
The court will release a sentence in September and Lucy Lawless might be looking at three years behind bars. However the actress wasn’t concerned about the sentence, given she is a first-time offender. But she worried the arrest might impede her acting career and he traveling. “If I couldn’t travel, obviously that would be a tremendous pain in the neck” she said.
This February the actress spent 77 hours on the oil-drilling ship chartered by Shell Oil. She and the other activists stayed in the 174-foot tower where they camped and kept the world informed about their position. Eventually the police arrested all the activists, including Lucy Lawless. Back then, she told Us Weekly the arrest was just the beginning of the battle to save the Arctic. “Seven of us climbed up that drill ship to stop Arctic drilling, but 133,000 of us came down”.
“We will continue to stand in solidarity with the communities and species that depend on the Arctic for their lives until shell cancels its plans to drill in this magical world” the actress told the magazine back then.
