Jennifer Aniston’s “Wanderlust” – a box office fiasco

Jennifer Aniston’s personal life is going through a flourishing period. Unfortunately, we can’t say the same thing about her career. According to Us Weekly, the actress’ latest movie, “Wanderlust” was released this week on the big screen, but analysts called it a box office fiasco, given the small numbers of film goers who have chosen to view this movie.

“Wanderlust” occupied the eight position of the weekend classification with only $6.6 million earnings. Aniston co-starred with her real life partner, Justin Theroux and her longtime pal, Paul Rudd with whom she played in “The Object of My affection” in 1998.

Critics have long noticed the 43-year-old actress’ descending career path. In fact, Aniston didn’t have a number one box office debut since her 2009 movie “He’s Just Not That Into You”. If “Wanderlust” had a weak start, we can’t say the same thing about “Act of Valor”, the motion picture which was produced with the participation of real-life Navy SEALS. The movie made $24.7 million in its debut weekend, thus occupying the top position.

The second place of the weekend chart was taken by Tyler Perry’s “Goode Deeds”. The film features Gabrielle Union and Thandie Newton’s performances and managed to raise $16 million.

On the next three positions we find the same movies that were highly appreciated in the previous weekends. “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” continues to draw many kids to the theaters; its revenue for the weekend amounted, according to the numbers provided by the analysts, to $13.5 million. Denzel Washington’s “Safe House” is no longer as requested as it used to be in its first week; however, the movie is still in the top five motion pictures. This weekend, it came on the fourth place with $11.4 million revenue.

The fifth most requested movie of the weekend was “The Vow”. Producers never expected this production to be so popular. They initially thought that people will want to see it around Saint Valentine’s Day. Despite this, “The Vow” continues to attract viewers, thus gathering $10 million earnings last weekend.

  1. “Critics have long noticed the 43-year-old actress’ descending career path. In fact, Aniston didn’t have a number one box office debut since her 2009 movie “He’s Just Not That Into You”” – You might want to re-check your reporting since Jennifer is coming off a banner year in 2011: she had two huge openings, one that debuted at #1 (JGWI) and the other at #2 (HB). Both films opened to about $30 million, crossed $100 million domestically, and grossed more than $200 million worldwide on modest production budgets. In fact she brought in almost half a billion at the box office last year. No one but tabloids desperate to put her down have been saying she’s on a descending career path, because it’s simply not true. Her last 4 films have all earned more than 2.5 times their production budgets at the box office, and she has been one of Forbes’ most bankable stars for years. So Wanderlust didn’t do well – it took $6 million with a production budget of $30 million. It will likely go on to break even or earn a small profit once DVD and TV sales are added. The one who you should be concerned about is Rudd, who is the lead of the film, an exec producer and now has 3 openings in a row of $7 million or less.

  2. I’d like to see Jennifer in something more serious …stretch like “The Good Girl” and “Derailed’….too much Rachel and the real Jen in her acting. I love her dearly and would like to see her make some meaningful choices!

  3. When Jennifer Aniston is the main draw of the movie it tanks. Just go with it was an Adam Sandler movie, he’s the draw. He could have had any actress (other than himself) play opposite of him and had the same results or better. In Horrible Boss, she was only one of 3 supporting cast. She certainly wasn’t one of the three stars. When someone tried to claim shes “not as bad a you think” by pointing to movies where she was part of the ensemble cast, that’s desperate.

  4. How about Just Go with it and Horrible Bosses ? The made it to the #1 and #2 at the Box Office. Next time make sure u check your records more carefully

  5. Her movies have bombed unless they have a well known male co-star or dog. Out of 25 movies she made, four have made more then 100 million and that is because of Owen Wilson, Adam Sandler, Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller. All friends of hers that are trying to help her albeit to no good. She cannot carry a movie, check your facts. Research it, all critics say as much.
