Tom Cruise has been under the spotlight for months now and so have his failed marriages before Katie Holmes. In a recent article, Nicole Kidman says it wasn’t “Eyes Wide Shut” that ended her marriage to Tom Cruise.
Back in 1999, when Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were all the rage in the sexual drama “Eyes Wide Shut” many said their marriage was in trouble. The rumors persisted throughout the time, until Nicole Kidman herself decided to clear the whole matter. In a recent essay for the Hollywood Reporter, Nicole Kidman denies that “Eyes Wide Shut” was the end of her marriage to Tom Cruise.
In “Eyes Wide Shut” Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman played a couple that had a lot of issues and the kind of chemistry that lead from drama to sex. But then again, that’s Stanley Kubrick for you. At that time, many people thought Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were going through a rough patch that would have been responsible for their divorce two years later. According to the actress, that’s not the case.
“People thought that making the film was the beginning of the end of my marriage, but I don’t really think it was” Nicole Kidman writes for the Hollywood Reporter. “Tom and I were close then, and it was very much the three of us. Onscreen, the husband and wife are at odds, and Stanley wanted to use our marriage as a supposed reality” she confessed.
Both young and charmed by Stanley Kubrick, Nicole Kidman says that she and tom Cruise “decided to dedicate ourselves to a great filmmaker and artist” who “used the movie as provocation, pretending it was our sex life – which we weren’t oblivious to, but obviously it wasn’t us”.
There’s one thing about Nicole Kidman playing in “Eyes Wide Shut” that will always be recalled: the raw and natural sexuality. Apparently, it was Stanley that helped the actress get over some of her inhibitions.
“Stanley had to coax me into some of the sexuality in the film in the beginning, but we shot things that were a lot more extreme that didn’t end up in the movie” Nicole Kidman confessed about playing in “Eyes Wide Shut”.
