Well-known for his extremely successful role in the Ghostbusters, Harold Ramis died at the age of 69.
It has been reported that the cause of death was an autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis. This is a very rare condition which causes swelling of the blood vessels. The death of the actor was confirmed by his agent, who told BBC about the condition that Harold Ramis suffered from.
It seems that the actor was first diagnosed with this condition back in 2010. The actor refused to talk too much about his disease.
Harold Ramis died at his home in Chicago, after years of battling his severe illness. The disease caused severe complications for the actor, who spend 4 months learning how to walk again, although he never fully recovered.
Harold Ramis remains best known for his role in Ghostbusters, but he is also famous for work at the movie Groundhog Day. Still, it was his part in the Ghostbuster franchise back in the 1980s which made Ramis a popular star. Throughout the year, Ramis became well known as a writer and movie director, too.
His work includes some amazingly famous movies. Actually, Ramis wrote the 1980 film Caddyshack, the Groundhog Day, as well as the National Lampoon series. His last work is the 2009 movie Year One, which he wrote and directed. The actor also had a part in the movie.
The popular Ghostbusters co-stars of Harold Ramis also paid tribute to the talented actor. “Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of my brilliant, gifted, funny friend, co-writer/performer and teacher Harold Ramis,” Dan Aykroyd said.
“Harold Ramis and I together did ‘The National Lampoon Show’ off-Broadway, ‘Meatballs,’ ‘Stripes,’ ‘Caddyshack,’ ‘Ghostbusters’ and ‘Groundhog Day.’ He earned his keep on this planet. God bless him,” Bill Murray said in a statement.
Another famous star who paid tribute to Harold Ramis was Billy Crystal. “Sad to hear my friend Harold Ramis passed away. A brilliant, funny, actor and director. A wonderful husband and dad. Big loss to us all,” the actor and comedian wrote on his Twitter page.
A statement was released by the star’s family, too, confirming the tragic news. “His creativity, compassion, intelligence, humor and spirit will be missed by all who knew and loved him,” the statement said.
The popular actor is survived by his second wife, Erica, as well as their sons Julian and Daniel and daughter from first marriage, Violet. Harold Ramis had two grandchildren. The actor divorced his first wife, Anne, years ago.
Harold Ramis remains one of the most successful comedy filmmakers of his time.
