Yes, everybody loves Ellen DeGeneres and her getting a Mark Twain prize for humor only makes us wonder, why did it take so long?
This year’s Mark Twain Prize for American Humor goes to Ellen DeGeneres. Just like Ellen asked, why didn’t she get this sooner? The 54 year old comedian is the fifteenth recipient of the honor, awarded by the Kennedy Center. She will receive the honor October 22 and a tribute show will be broadcasted later this year.
The Kennedy Center explained it chose Ellen DeGeneres for this year’s prize because her “special brand of humor has allowed us to find hilarity in the mundane and has kept us laughing for years”. In the end, Ellen is one of the “people who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to” Mark Twain.
“It’s such an honor to receive the Mark Twain Prize. To get the same award that has been given to people like Bill Cosby, Tina Fey and Will Ferrell, it really makes me wonder…why didn’t I get this sooner?” said Ellen.
Cappy McGarr, executive producer of the Ellen DeGeneres show, seemed pretty excited with the honor the star just received: “Bob Newhart, Bill Cosby and Ellen carried on that tradition of Twain’s observational humor. And Ellen is not just a comedian, she is a miracle worker”. McGarr also mentioned some of Ellen’s breakthroughs: “She got the president to dance, she got the First Lady to do push-ups and she got Tom Delay to laugh. She has such a great charm”.
McGarr also argued against the doubt that Ellen DeGeneres had received the Mark Twain prize for being gay. “The Kennedy Center is apolitical. We have had so many people who have their own brand and type of humor” said McGarr. “We don’t pick winners because of any advocacy they do. It is all about funny and a funny life”.
For Ellen DeGeneres the Mark Twain comedy prize is just another one on a pretty big list. She’s got 12 People’s Choices Awards, another 3 Teen Choice Awards, topped with 2 Genesis Awards and a GLAAD Media Award. Plus, her talk show was honored with 35 Daytime Emmy Awards. Impressive, or what?
