The latest performance of Lady Gaga at the SXSW has managed to create a lot of controversy. Now, Demi Lovato decided to talk about this performance, saying that it glamorizes eating disorders.
Lady Gaga performed at the SXSW and shocked absolutely everyone. The star brought Millie Brown on the stage to vomit on her during the song Swine. While Gaga seemed to be happy that her fans support her each time, it seems that at least one person did not like at all her choice.
Demi Lovato claims that this performance only glamorizes eating disorders. “Sad… As if we didn’t have enough people glamorizing eat disorders already,” the young star tweeted on Friday.
Her choice to post this message is not shocking at all, as Demi Lovato is well known to have struggled with bulimia for quite some time. “Bottom line, it’s not ‘cool’ or ‘artsy’ at all,” Lovato also added.
However, some of Lady Gaga’s fans were extremely bothered by this message. They claimed that this is a form of art and Gaga never intended to send another message, despite what Lovato might think. Fans also underlined the fact that Lady Gaga suffered from an eating disorder, as well.
Demi Lovato went to explain what she wanted to say, clarifying things. “All I’m saying is, artists in pop culture have influence on people.. Some of which are people who aren’t capable of understanding the art that is that is expressed by their idols,” the star wrote. “Young people who are struggling to figure out their identities are seriously influenced by the things they see their idols do,” Lovato added.
Lovato also explained that many people will not understand that this is a form of art, but they might think that bulimia is cool. Lovato added that she is a huge Lady Gaga fan and she remains a fan of the artist. Lady Gaga has not responded to these tweets, at least not yet.
However, Brown reacted and defended this performance in a recent interview with TMZ, claiming that she uses her body to “create something beautiful, to express myself.”
