Perhaps for many rappers, getting arrested is just a day in their life, and Cory Gunz just experienced that. On Saturday, rapper Cory Gunz got busted on weapons charge.
According to the police, rapper Cory Gunz, aka Peter Pankey Jr., was arrested in the Bronx on Saturday, around 2:30 p.m. for holding a gun in his backpack. Officers found him at the corner of Westchester Ave and Ward Ave in Soundview carrying an unregistered Taurus .9mm handgun.
Cory Gunz was taken to the 43rd Precinct in the Bronx and then has been transported to Central Booking. In the same night he appeared in front of the Bronx Criminal Court on charges of criminal possession of a loaded firearm. Bail was set at $30,000 and was paid by the artist’s father, rapper Peter Gunz. He told the press leading up to his son’s arrest:
“I spoke to the arresting officer, and so far, what I’m hearing from his is that they got a phone call at the station saying they should look out”. Peter Gunz also explained that officers didn’t know “he was Cory Gunz. They just saw a bunch of kids following him around”. But he did state that “it was definitely an illegal search”.
After getting out of jail, Cory Gunz told The Daily News: “This was a big mistake on my part. I didn’t have any intentions of harming everyone or committing a criminal activity. So many young people look up to me and I need to fight though this”.
But, his father feels the firearm charge could bring the worse later on. Such a charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of three and ½ years. “This is Cory’s first offense, but sometimes they like to make an example out of rappers and people with any kind of celebrity to them”, said Peter Gunz.
The rapper also explained how seeing his son in the prison felt. “To go to a precinct and see your son, your junior, in handcuffs, it’s heartbreaking. Anytime you see your child in jail, in the cell, in handcuffs, it’s very hard”.
Last year, Peter and Cory Gunz starred in an MTV show called “Son of Gun”. A sort of documentary tracking Cory Gunz’ career.
