Actress Annette Charles, best known to us for the role of Cha Cha in the late 70’s movie “Grease” has died of cancer complications at the age of 63. She passed away on Wednesday night in her home in Los Angeles, Reuters reports.
According to her spokesperson, Annette Charles has found out about her condition only a few months prior to her death. A member of her family told TMZ how she found out about her condition. “Annette had recently started having difficulty breathing … and when she went to the doctor she learned that she had a cancerous tumor in her one of her lungs.”
The actress was best known for the role in Grease, in 1978. She played the part of Cha Cha Di Gregorio, who was known to be the best dancer, as she herself states: “They call me Cha Cha. Because I’m the best dancer at St. Bernadette’s.”
Cha Cha Di Gregorio outdanced all of Rydell High in the dance competition, after pulling Danny Zuko (played by John Travolta) by her side, as her partner, leaving Sandy (Olivia Newton John) with no dance partner and indirectly pushing her to make the change of look.
Cha Cha is the second character from Grease that we have to say goodbye to for good, after co-star Jeff Conaway’s death in May. The actor who played Kenickie passed away at only 60 years of age, due to medication overdose and pneumonia complications. He had been trying to treat what he thought was a common cold with medication and had arrived to the hospital in an unconscious state. After a two-week induced coma, he was taken off the machines and died one day later.
Annette Charles has also appeared in a number of TV series, such as “High Chaparral”, “The Flying Nun”, “Gunsmoke,” “Mod Squad,” “Bonanza,” “Barnaby Jones” and “The Bionic Woman. Charles was retired from acting for over two decades. She studied social work and later became a university professor.
