It looks like it is Ben Affleck the director that finally get appraisal from the film industry. The rumor at the Telluride festival is that Ben Affleck’s “Argo” might get to see the Oscars.
If history repeats itself, then most of the films presented at the Telluride Film Festival in the beautiful San Juan Mountains will get to be Oscar winners. The rumor is Ben Affleck’s “Argo” is estimated to be among the top finalists for the Oscars.
The Telluride Film Festival is at its 39th annual edition. This year it began August 31 and ended last night. It had a lean movie schedule. Only 25 movies made it to the list, but apparently most of them are good enough to get one or more Oscar awards. Among them is Ben Affleck’s directorial project “Argo”, a full blown drama mixed with a side of thriller and some Hollywood irony.
While the story doesn’t look all that promising, people that actually saw Ben Affleck’s “Argo” were pretty happy with it. According to producers, “Argo” is “based on a declassified true story” of a CIA exfiltration expert played by Ben Affleck who has to save 6 U.S. hostages from Iran during the 1979 crisis.
“I thought, ‘This is so crazy. If it weren’t true, you just couldn’t make this movie because it would be too ridiculous” said Ben Affleck in a statement for The Daily Beast. Well, guess what Mr. Director, many of today’s movie buffs don’t expect that much of this “ridiculous” story where you also get to play the main part…
“That it was rooted in hard facts made it compelling, and Chris Terrio wrote a really smart screenplay that gave me the chance to weave together three different themes and three different worlds” said director and actor Ben Affleck. So “Argo” is a combination of “the CIA, the Hollywood satire and the Iran tensions”.
To tell you the truth, for the most part movie buffs aren’t all that impressed with Ben Affleck’s “Argo”. Yet, people at Telluride Film Festival say this movie is Oscar material. But the Toronto Film Festival should set the record straight whether or not Ben Affleck’s “Argo” will actually get to see the Oscars.
