Ann Curry Was Weak For “Today”

Likely one of the most unexpected and dramatic television host change of recent time, Ann Curry’s departure from “Today” could hurt NBC News more than imagined. Soon after her farewell show, president of NBC News bashed her performance, saying Ann Curry was weak for “Today”.

It’s one of the worst-case scenarios for a TV host. Ann Curry had the chance to live the dream for a few months, as she took over for Meredith Vieira last summer on the “Today” show. But as the network grew discontent with her performance, rumors about her departure surfaced long before she could announce it herself. Then, soon after her farewell show, the NBC News president bashed her performance as a host.

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Steve Capus, president of NBC News, talked very poorly about the former “Today” host. Basically from the network’s point of view, Ann Curry was weak for what the “Today” host job demanded. “We gave her a year to prove herself, and ultimately we came to the conclusion that she had played at the highest level she could” explained Steve Capus.

“When you’re in the major leagues of our profession, you’ve got to continue to be at peak performance in order to stay there” the NBC News president added. Soon after Ann Curry became a regular presence in the show, the network noticed she wasn’t exactly in her element and thought it was because “it was not where her real passion was”.

“In her heart of hearts, I think she would admit that” said Steve Capus. “I think her real passion is built around reporting on international stories. It’s tough to convey a sincere interest in something if you don’t possess it” reads Capus’ interview with the Hollywood Reporter.

Before the rumors would be confirmed, Ann Curry’s fans made a petition to the network to keep her job. But when Ann Curry had to inform her viewers of her departure, many felt it was something of a public execution meant to boost ratings for NBC’s show. She told USA Today last week: “I’m going to have to tell our viewers. That’s what makes me more emotional than anything. I don’t want to leave them. I love them. And I will really miss them”.

  1. Ann Curry is the reason we watched the Today Show. The show is becoming weaker but it was not Ann, it was their programming and the amount of fluff and sensationalist news they presented. You do not get the real important and world news from Today.. I wish I knew Ann’s schedule to know when she is on. We will no longer be watching Matt Lauer, Savannah is no match for Ann Curry. Now we are watching GMA and loving it.. but I will miss Ann immensely.
