Over the weekend, “Jeopardy!” fans got quite a scare. Alex Trebek, “Jeopardy!” host was hospitalized after suffering a mild heart attack.
The irony has it that while “Jeopardy!” was getting a Daytime Emmy award, its 71-year-old host was being hospitalized. Alex Trebek suffered a mild heart attack this Saturday but he is expected to recover just in time for the next season of the show. Truth be told, it’s surprising Trebek hasn’t suffered more damage, with him feasting on candy and cola each morning for decades.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that the 71-year-old “Jeopardy!” host was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Trebek suffered this weekend his second heart attack, but according to a statement released this Sunday by the Sony Television spokeswoman Paula Askansas “Trebek is in good spirits and is currently under observation and undergoing further testing”.
Alex Trebek has been hosting “Jeopardy!” since 1984 and should be preparing for the 29th season of the show. Paula Askansas’s statement added that doctors expect the host to make a full recovery, so the 29th season of “Jeopardy!” won’t be at risk.
The host of one of the longest running television game shows in United States hasn’t been exactly the most wary man. He has quite an unexpected diet for a man his age and coupled with the 29th season of “Jeopardy!” that’s now in works, Trebek’s heart attack might not be exactly a surprise.
In a recent interview with Business Week, the 71-year-old confessed he’s got quite an unusual breakfast. “A morning routine of candy and cola might not seem strange for someone other than Trebek” reads Business Week’s article. “He’s seemingly not the sort of guy who, at 71, might choose a wakeup menu better suited to a child whose mother’s back is turned” writes Frazier Moore in the Business Week material.
“When I say ‘the Breakfast of Champions’, I’m serious” said Trebek. “People say, ‘You look to be in great shape for your age’, and I guess I am, except that I keep breaking things”, the host joked during the interview.
Although Trebek seems to be coping just fine with his hosting of one of the most popular shows in the U.S., a few weeks ago the man uttered something about retirement. He then said that “30 years has a nice ring to it” but Trebek chuckled when Business Review asked him about it. “Saying that I’ve THOUGHT about it doesn’t mean that I’m DOING it” he said.
