Alanis Morissette Talks About New Album

“Havoc and Bright Lights” is Alanis Morissette’s first album since she became a mom. The artist’s eighth album is an emotional journey, with song titles that might come off as a bit unexpected.

Alanis Morissette was sat down by Billboard to talk about the new album and what it’s like being a mom and an artist. “Havoc and Bright Lights” was an album the singer made at home while coping with breast-feeding and being a mom to her little bundle of joy. The new Alanis Morissette album is about reconnecting with herself and singing while being a mother to her son.

“I created a mini-studio in my house, because my son was five-and-a-half months old at the time, and I wanted to be available for breast-feeding and being a mom” Alanis Morissette told Billboard. “At the same time, I have this really big calling and vocation – if I don’t write songs, I start getting really depressed. So we made it possible by doing it in-house” she added.

Alanis Morissette told Billboard her new album “Havoc and Bright Lights” was inspired about today’s view of the alpha women. “It’s an exciting time” she says about today’s society that is having the alpha women “celebrated, championed and even supported”.

“Guardian” is the first single off the new Alanis Morissette studio album. “I talk about the freedom and safety of my son, and in the verses I talk about wanting to offer the same level of connection and attunement to my own self, which I haven’t done” confessed the artist.

Compared to her previous albums, “Havoc and Bright Lights” makes her sound a bit different. Looking back at the 1991’s Alanis, the artist said she finds her to be “a little dirty, but she’s awesome”.  The new Alanis Morissette album is proof that a happy marriage and being a mom can easily change even the more rebellious of us.

“I have about 11 minutes to myself every day” said Alanis Morissette of being a mom, a wife and an artist. “So instead of shopping for four-and-a-half hours, I shop for four-and-a-half minutes. I can’t miss a minute with my son” she added. “If I have an hour dinner with my husband, I have to be fully there, because being distracted is exhausting” revealed Alanis Morissette.
