Last week, Zach Galifianakis and Will Ferrell’s new project, “The Campaign” premiered. In a recent interview with USA Today, Zach Galifianakis of “The Hangover” and Will Ferrell of “The Legend of Ron Burgundy” talk about “The Campaign”, real politics and life.
Last Friday, at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, Jay Roach’s last movie premiered. “The Campaign” features the A-list of funnymen stars, including Zach Galifianakis, Will Ferrell, Dan Aykroyd and Jason Sudeikis. It’s a comedy some might consider to be just a bit too controversial, but with November’s presidential elections just a few months away, “The Campaign” is a reminder of how cutthroat competition in politics.
Comedian Zach Galifianakis plays Marty Huggins in “The Campaign”. He is the naive congressional candidate that runs against Will Ferrell’s character, Congressman Cam Brady. The two comedians make quite an odd couple: Galifianakis is your innocent oddball who abides by a moral conduit that’s uncommon in politics. Ferrell is a sex-crazed politician, determined to win no matter what.
“It’s an asymmetrical relationship. I am not the guy from TheHangover, and people expect that”, Zach Galifianakis told USA Today. “They think of you as a cartoon character. And they’re disappointed when you want to go about your business and urinate” he added.
“The Hangover” star told USA Today the aim with “The Campaign” was to “highlight the ridiculousness that politics has descended into”. “Whether you are on the right or the left, everyone can agree that there are a lot of outside influences in American politics that are not good for the system” the 42-year-old actor said. “There’s just too much money” he concluded.
Asked by USA Today which is the most cutthroat environment Hollywood or politics, Will Ferrell concluded it was definitely politics. “It’s the most brutal thing ever…It’s theater at its greatest” the comedian said. “And yet, obviously something is going on because the partisanship has never been stronger and no one is trying to work things out” Ferrell added.
Zach Galifianakis said politics is so “hard because cameras are there all the time”. “It’s really hard not to have a misstep. That’s why the scrutiny is so high. As a politician, you have to be public all the time. It maybe keeps the good people from running” Galifianakis told USA Today.
