PC Mag reports that Viber’s Messaging app will arrive on desktops this week. The service was only available for smartphones, but the company decided to create a PC and Mac version so users could benefit of a better integration between mobile and desktop devices.
Viber has become very popular in the past years; the mobile app is currently used by 200 million smartphone owners. Given these figures, the developer announced on Tuesday that the messaging app will also be available on desktop. The move could make Viber messaging one of the most used mobile services at present considering that the app is compatible with numerous platforms including Android, iOS, Windows Phone and BlackBerry. Starting this week, users will be able to install the messaging service on their PC or MAC devices, as well.
Viber CEO Talmon Marco told the press that smartphones are the most used mobile gadgets at present. Despite this, people prefer to use their smartphones at home or in their office where there is a desktop or a laptop nearby. Viber Desktop was designed particularly for these users who want to be able to quickly switch between multiple devices. Marco further added that Viber Desktop enables users to choose the most convenient device and transfer calls between phones and desktops.
Analysts describe the fact that Viber has managed to become a well-known messaging service as a remarkable success. Skype and VoIP have always been strong competitors for Viber, but the latter has managed to defeat them due to its innovative features such as the one-tap seamless call transfer between desktops and phones. In addition, Viber Desktop is the only messaging application that offers video calls. “With this new beta feature, users can now make desktop-to-desktop video calls to other Viber users,” was Marco’s declaration.
Viber Desktop is not the only release that the company will make in the following month. The developer revealed its intentions to roll out Viber 3.0, a version that includes major updates for Android and iOS. A new BlackBerry app is also expected by the end of this quarter.
