NBC’s “Today” took a huge risk yesterday, as it chose to skip the 9/11 moment in favor of an interview with the Kardashian matriarch. “Today” got insanely criticized for airing Kris Jenner talking about her breast augmentation and not the 9/11 ceremony.
While all rivals made sure the 9/11 ceremony and anniversary get enough air space, NBC had another thing coming. The network choose a different path than its rivals, deciding to air Kris Jenner talking about her breasts, while the 9/11 ceremony was happening. It was a bold move that damaged the ratings for the “Today” show and it got the network just criticism.
The 9/11 moment remains a delicate topic for Americans. Skipping on the 9/11 ceremony seems like a sacrilege and an offense brought to those that survived the events. But, it’s likely NBC didn’t see things this way yesterday morning when it decided to have “Today” cover Kris Jenner’s breast augmentation procedure, while the rest of the U.S. was having a moment of silence.
“Good Morning America”, “CBS This Morning”, CNN, Fox News Channel and MSNBC all joined the moment of silence the White House initiated. Meanwhile, NBC’s “Today” had other more urgent issues to discuss. So, it was a “proper” way to commemorate the moment the first hijacked plane hit the WTC 11 years ago by hearing Kris Jenner talk about breast implants, weight loss, fitness and how she feels about Kanye West dating her daughter Kim Kardashian.
Twitter users highly criticized NBC for choosing “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” instead of the 9/11 ceremony. “The Today Show chose to continue their interview with Kris Jenner rather than participate in a 9.11 moment of silence. DISGUSTING” said one user. “The fact that Kris Jenner is a guest on the today show on 9/11 seriously makes me doubt humanity” complained another user on Twitter.
NBC reacted to the criticism saying the network had given enough air time to the 9/11 commemoration. Megan Kopf, spokeswoman for NBC’s “Today” show, released a plain statement that reads: “The Today show dedicated a considerable amount of time to September 11th coverage this morning throughout the entire show”.
Kopf also added the network had covered the topic with an interview with a survivor of the 9/11 terrorist attack as well as shots of the Freedom Tower.
