Actor Tobey Maguire could pay 80K as a settlement in the lawsuit regarding the illegal poker winnings, the Associated Press reports. Initially, he was sued for over 300,000 dollars.
Tobey Maguire and other celebrities involved in the Texas Hold’Em illegal matches could reach a settlement in the case. Maguire could pay up to 80,000 dollars, if the settlement gets approved by a judge in December. The money will go to bankruptcy trustee Howard Ehrenberg , who is planning to take back as much money as possible from Bradley Ruderman, a hedge fund operator who bilked from several investors in order to finance his own glam lifestyle.
Maguire and the other celebrities and gamblers cited in the lawsuit claim they were not aware of Ruderman’s scheme.
The lawsuit took to court 22 people with the purpose of gaining back over 1.7 million dollars. Of the 22, 14 have already settled for certain sums of money. Howard Ehrenberg, who filed the lawsuit, says that the sum of money paid by the actor is in the same range as the sums paid by the other people who settled their cases.
Tobey Maguire outlines that the settlement is not the proof that he was involved in Ruderman’s scheme consciously and willingly. However, paying 80,000 dollars seems more reasonable than to continue the lawsuit, prove his innocence and spend more money. In the official court fillings, Maguire noted that he lost almost 169,000 dollars to con artist Ruderman, who is now serving a sentence of 10 years in jail for fraud.
