Taking a step into the past, Dropcam was released on the connected webcam scene in 2009, and during the years the company has released several products, like the Dropcam Pro at the price of 200 dollars.
Nest, the smart-thermostat maker and Google property, has decided to buy the brand for the impressive price of 555 million dollars, last June. After weeks of speculation, it seems that the company has finally released a new and improved Dropcam Pro replacement, under the name of Nest Cam.
To be mentioned that this new cam is way better than the previous Dropcam Pro. Nest Cam comes with a full 1080p video resolution, magnetic and rotating stand, a new app interface and other couple of minor improvements. To be mentioned that this version comes at the same sum of money as its predecessor.
For customers who are looking for a webcam that comes with a few security features, the new Nest Cam is highly recommended, especially since it costs only 200 dollars, but customers should be aware to not expect for this webcam to function as a true security camera. This device comes with 1080p video, a 1920×1080, 2-megapixel resolution, sound and motion alerts, two-way talk, night vision and optional Nest Aware cloud services that allow users to revisit past footage and set activity zone for a fee.
Unfortunately, Nest Cam is not a fully functioning security camera and its biggest issue is that it doesn’t have customizable alerts. Nest Cam is programmed to issue a maximum of one sound or motion alert at every 30 minutes, which is the same as it was at Dropcam Pro.
This faulty feature places this cam far away from being a security camera. Sadly, it also doesn’t offer the best value for cloud recording compared with other famous brands that are placed at the same price range. This camera is available at the price of 200 dollars in the US and can be found at chain retailers, for example Home Depot, Best Buy, Lowe’s nationwide, but also on Amazon and Nest’s online store.
