Taye Diggs recently released his latest project: a children’s book entitled “Chocolate me”. Up to now, the actor has had a very versatile 15 year-long-career in showbiz. He started on the Broadway as part of the original award winning “Rent”, then stared in soap operas such as “Guiding Light”, only to move on to making movies and land on to primetime drama in “Private Practice”. Recently, the 40 years old actor got to finish a project which had been in the makings for the past 20 years, a book for kids named “Chocolate me”.
The story book is based on a poem wrote by Diggs in college which depicted the things he had to put up with when being made fun of by other children for looking different than them. He remembers the neighborhood kids picking on each and every difference they could notice and then questioning them all. This led to his first lesson in self esteem and valuing and embracing his roots. To the day he can recall his mother’s words regarding the situation and the way she influenced his perspective on the differences ever since.
Diggs had one of his close friends, Shane Evans, become part of the team set to turn the poem into an inspirational book for kids who deal with acceptance issues. Evans handled the book illustrations. Even though the actor can hardly picture himself as a writer, he considers the entire experience as coming from his heart and real life situations he had to face. “It’s kind of a cool feeling to know that you’re helping people”, he added.
The extra bonus which came with being the author of a children book is having the opportunity to read it to your own kid. Diggs life was completely changed when he became the father of his now 2 year old son, Walker.
Even though he became a parent at an age you’d think people know themselves to the brick, Diggs was taken by surprise by the new feelings his status as a father brought. It was amazing to be able to love another person with the intensity a parent loves his kid as well as incredibly scary to experience fear in such a huge degree.
Diggs has been married for nine years with his wife actress Idina Menzel and even though he claims his parenthood experience hasn’t changed his life too much, things are different for his wife. The couple met while acting together in “Rent” in 1996.
