Sony Walkman ZX2 is powered by Android

Over 35 years have passed since the first Sony Walkman appeared on the market and managed to rule most of the 80s and 90s, helping to make cassette tapes more famous. But the famous company did not stop here, after the cassette tape, Sony came up with Discman. However, in the early 2000s Sony had stumbled and its formats with names like ATRAC and MiniDisc crushed under the domination of MP3s. This was the time when the Apple iPod started to lead the market.

But it didn’t last long, because smartphones started to push the iPod into obscurity. Now, it seems that the standalone music players are making a comeback, and companies such as Astrell, Kern and Pono have shown that there is a market where enthusiasts can buy their favorite portables. Sony didn’t gave up and now, they are back in the mix, too. The Japanese company has launched Sony Walkman ZX2, which is starting to bring back the brand’s glory days.

Sony Walkman ZX2 is different compared to other audio portables, because this device has the ability to connect to Wi-Fi and also load Android apps. This is a good thing, but there is also a bad thing, which has to do with the cost of this device. Walkman ZX2 has the price of a laptop, which is around 1,199 dollars. Happily for Sony fans, there is also a non-Android alternative that costs one quarter of this price. To be mentioned that ZX2 is made for music lovers, so this means that those who want to have a portable that has a great design and delivers a good quality sound, can rest assured that the device is surely worth the money.

Sony Walkman NW-ZX2 looks as luxurious as the price says. It comes with a carved aluminum case and a thick headphone jack. The device is probably larger than several phones that exist on the market. It has a 4-inch LCD screen and on the back it features a grip that can be found on Canon cameras. The Walkman runs Android 4.2 and users can load streaming apps on it. NW-ZX2 will playback digital files up to 24 bit/192 KHz in MP3, AAC, WMA, AIFF, FLAC, ALAC, WAV and DSD formats. It has a capacity of 128GB of storage, but it also features a microSD expansion slot up to 64GB more.
