Bad Comments Bring Rush Limbaugh Back In The Spotlight

Those of you who have listened to Rush Limbaugh’s radio show are aware that he’s not the one to shy away because of some controversial comments. However, last week’s slut comments he made with regards to a student that was openly in favor of Obama’s birth control coverage policy, brought Rush Limbaugh back in the spotlight. This time with more scrutiny than ever before.

Sandra Fluke is the Georgetown student who has made it clear she feels Obama’s birth control coverage policy is an idea worth her support. For some reason, Rush Limbaugh got so bothered by the public support coming from this student he called her, among other things, a slut.

Basically the controversy started with the radio host’s comments that suggested Sandra Fluke wasn’t able to afford birth control because she of too much sex. “Your daughter…testifies she’s having so much sex she can’t afford her own birth control pills and she agrees that Obama should provide them, or the pope”. Then after calling her a slut and a prostitute, he said taxpayers are pimps. In the end, this says it all: “If we’re going to pay for your contraceptives and thus pay for you to have sex, we want something for it. We want you to post the videos online so we can all watch”.

A few days later, after Obama personally called Fluke to show his support and the public started to take action, Rush Limbaugh apologized saying he used the wrong words. “For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack” read Rush Limbaugh’s apology.

But that wasn’t enough for his sponsors. As of Sunday, six sponsors have stopped advertising during Limbaugh’s radio program, after their customers reacted against Wednesday’s comments. ProFlowers was the latest sponsor to drop the advertising bid. A statement from the company read: “Mr. Limbaugh’s recent comments went beyond political discourse to a personal attack and do not reflect our values as a company”.

Quicken Loans, Sleep Train and Sleep Number, as well as Carbonite, citrix Systems and LegalZoom have all dismissed Rush Limbaugh’s radio show.
