Sad news for Serena Williams’ fans. The famous tennis player will not play at the Indian Wells. Without a doubt, this is not good news for the BNP Paribas Open, either, considering that Serena is the most famous name when it comes to female tennis and the number 1 female tennis player.
So, Serena announced that she will sit out of this major tennis tournament, joining quite an impressive list of Grand Slam singles titlists who would be out of the tennis court this time. This includes Petra Kvitova and of course Maria Sharapova. When it comes to the reason why she will not be playing at this tennis tournament, Selena said that it is all because of a left knee injury which she suffered last year and which prevented her from properly training.
Unfortunately for Serena, not being able to attend means that she will most likely lose her title of being the world’s top-ranked female player. Serena also revealed that she will not attend the Miami Open, which follows at the end of the month.
Maria Sharapova is quite obvious that wouldn’t be able to attend, considering that she is still serving a 15-month drug ban. However, the star won’t have to wait much longer before getting back to the tennis court. She will be at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, in April.
Petra, on the other hand, is still recovering after a quite shocking event. The star was stabbed during a home burglary. An intruder attacked her in her home and stabbed her multiple times in 2016. The star had to undergo surgery after the event. She has been working hard to recover and hopefully she will be able to soon return to the tennis court.
Another female tennis player who will be missing the BNP Paribas Open is Victoria Azarenka. However, in this case the news are great, as Azarenka has just become a mom. She give birth to a baby boy, Leo, on December 20, 2016. The star has not revealed the exact moment when she will be able back on the tennis court, but most likely this will happen later in the season.
