Sarah Hyland of “Modern Family” revealed in a recent interview with the Seventeen magazine that she underwent a kidney transplant in early April. The actress recovered in a brief period of time and was thus able to continue filming for the ABC series.
Judging by her performance on television, nobody would ever suspect that Sarah Hyland might be afflicted by personal problems. The 21-year-old actress plays the part of Haley in the “Modern Family”, a teenager who is generally preoccupied with her relationships. In real life, however, Hyland’s problems are a lot bigger.
Sarah has always suffered from kidney dysplasia, that is, a condition caused by the fact that the baby’s kidneys don’t develop properly during pregnancy. Her health status was getting worse, so the actress had to receive a second kidney from her father, actor Edward James Hyland. The “Modern Family” star told reporters that the transplant made her realize that she was blessed with a second chance at life.
The teenage actress told the press that her convalescence enabled her to see that family is truly important because they will always stand by your side in dire straits. “My dad gave me a freakin’ kidney!” the actress exclaimed.
It is not just the nuclear family that matters, according to Hyland, but also the family you built on your own. She further explained that her boyfriend, “High School Musical 3” actor, Matt Prokop, made everything he could to help the actress get well after the surgery. He always makes sure Hyland gets her medication on time and he takes her to doctor appointments, so Sarah thinks she is the luckiest girl to have him be there for her.
Although the 21-year-old star has quickly recovered after the surgery, she continues to feel certain consequences. She stated in the interview that her taste buds have been affected by the medication she has to take, so she no longer enjoys food. Before the surgery, Sarah used to like Arnold Palmer’s cuisine, but now she is indifferent to it. In addition, the actress confessed that she was deeply impressed with the support she received from her friends; therefore, she will collaborate with George Lopez’s Lopez Foundation to help underprivileged people.
