Last month, Mary Kennedy killed herself in circumstances that remained just as unexpected as the rest of deaths in the family. At the time of her death, the court hadn’t yet given its ruling regarding her divorce from Robert F. Kennedy Jr. In a legal filing that surfaced this Sunday, RFK Jr. says, among others, that Mary Kennedy abused him.
Robert F. Kennedy and Mary tied the knot back in 1994 and had four children together throughout their marriage. But over the past few years, the couple entered a rough patch that would end in a divorce filing. The papers were filed two years ago, but the court hasn’t come to a decision yet. On Sunday, a court divorce filing by RFK Jr. surfaced. The information revealed angered Mary Kennedy’s family and sparked controversy as RFK Jr. claims she abused him.
The Daily Beast published some of the court filings on their website earlier this week. The fragments are a close look at the couple’s relationship, the instances that tore them apart and details that show being a Kennedy is not easy. RFK Jr. wrote about several episodes that put Mary Kennedy in quite a negative light.
RFK Jr. wrote about an episode that happened in 1997 when Mary allegedly took his daughter’s wallet and plane ticket and was trying to convince him it was the girl’s fault. Apparently his daughter said that Mary hated her. He said he eventually found the missing items hidden in his wife’s clothes.
The revealed documents read about Mary stealing stuff, appearing on trips she wasn’t invited, getting drunk and threatening to kill herself in front of the children. However, one of the most controversial parts of the document refers to instances when Mary abused RFK Jr. and both his children.
The affidavit reads: “Mary’s violence and physical abuse toward me began before we were married. She said she intended to kill herself unless I called off the divorce”. RFK goes on saying that in 2010, “Mary ran over and killed the dog, Porcia in the driveway… Mary was intoxicated. I opened the door and she leapt out of her bed and hit me with a roundhouse punch”.
He also added Mary once yelled at him in front of their son: “everything he does is evil and a fraud. He is a philanderer, an adulterer, a sex addict”.
