Little girls across the world are obsessed with princesses. Look at all of the movies, books and toys that cater to fantasy of becoming royalty. That dream doesn’t come true for very many little girls. Kate Middleton, however, is certainly an exception.
A Real-Life Fairytale
Middleton was lucky enough to fall in love with an heir to the British throne. Unlike Princess Diana before her, hers is a love match rather than a hastily arranged courtship between a prince and a suitable match from an acceptable noble family. While Kate’s family is well-to-do, her life certainly changed when she married Prince William.
Most of us grow up to realize that fantasy is just that: a fantasy. We’re content with living vicariously though downloadable games, romantic comedies and the occasional romance novel. All of those fictional outlets, however, tend to gloss over the actual details of what the daily life of royalty is like.
Just a Day in the Life Of…
Rather than holding a traditional full-time job, the Duchess of Cambridge (as she’s now known) essentially works for the royal family. She works on behalf of several charities and travels throughout the United Kingdom, and around the world in service of the crown. Prince William does maintain a full-time position as a helicopter rescue pilot. The couple makes every effort to maintain a difficult balance between fulfilling royal obligations with due pomp and decorum and maintaining as much of a normal life as possible.
The couple is careful not to be too extravagant, but trips to Singapore, Malaysia, Solomon Islands and Tuva certainly aren’t standard fare for us regular joes. Kate is often lauded for her fantastic taste in clothing and, as such, is photographed everywhere she goes.
Legitimate news media and paparazzi alike are constantly on alert and ready to snap a picture of the Duchess. Privacy is a rare and coveted thing for the couple. Any misstep or hint of scandal would be reported around the world at lightning speed. Even starting a family of their own was a topic of intense media scrutiny.
Sure, in-laws, friends and family might start asking at your wedding reception when you might start trying for a baby, but international news media probably weren’t analyzing your every outfit for a baby bump.
The Duke and Duchess didn’t even announce their own pregnancy! St. James Palace issued an announcement on their behalf after Kate was admitted to the hospital for severe morning sickness. Her condition, called Hyperemesis Gravidarum, often requires supplemental nutrition and hydration. Kate is expected to require a period of rest after leaving the hospital, so expect very few public outings in the next few weeks. Personal accounts of women who have suffered from Hyperemesis Gravidarum indicate that it can last for months or abate and reoccur.
The good news is that, with a royal heir on the line, Kate is sure to receive excellent medical attention. This is one time the Duchess shouldn’t be shy about indulging in any luxuries made available to her!
