Warren Jeffs, a polygamist of the sect of Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (whom he actually runs), was sentenced to life in prison for abusing his position so he would satisfy his own drives with women of all ages, including minors. The trial in Texas regarding a specific abuse of two girls ended on Tuesday with a maximum sentence, according to Christian Science Monitor.
The prosecutors tried to prove that polygamist Warren Jeffs was a pedophile, while he expressed the will of defending himself and remained silent most of the time during the trial. At one point he called one witness who, according to the Associated Press, gave “an extended Sunday school lesson”, presenting the beliefs that their religious sect is founded on. However, the prosecutors insisted that Jeffs has “corrupted and perverted” his leader role in the church’s hierarchy so that he could use women and children “to satisfy his own appetites and desires.”
The jury did not need much time to deliberate. They found him guilty in less than half an hour.
The two girls who were considered the victims were 12 and 15. It has been proven through DNA tests that not only did he have sexual intercourse with them, but he also fathered a child with the older one. The girls were only a small part of the number of minor wives Jeff has. The polygamist has a total of 79 wives. But only one of them, his first wife, is legally married to him. The other brides went through a ceremony of what his church calls “spiritual marriage”. Of them, 24 are under the age of 17.
The church that Jeff founded, the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints promotes the idea that living in polygamy is the way to gain divine acceptance. Jeffs used to tell women that satisfying him would please Jesus.
