The alligator backpack designed by the Olsen sisters sold like hotcakes despite the hefty tag saying 39,000 dollars each. According to Women’s Wear Daily, The Row designers said that it was the first thing that sold out.
During the launch of their new handbag collection, which took place in Paris on September 30, Ashley Olsen made the first comments about the alligator skin backpack. “It was the first thing that sold off the shelf”, she said. This was impressive, as in the last couple of years the fashion sector had to suffer as a result of the global crisis. “During our last economic crisis in the U.S., the only thing that went up was Hermes”, Ashley added.
The backpack comes in several dark colors. It has some golden hardware at the toggle and is actually the most expensive piece in their new collection, which starts from prices as high as 4,700 dollars for the smallest, simplest designs. The crocodile backpack competes with Victoria Beckham couture collection of accessories and bags and with Hermes, being in the same price range.
At Barney’s the bag was pre-ordered. Barney’s Fashion Director Amanda Brooks believes that such products are seen more as an investment than as simple accessories to an outfit. “If you were ever going to spend $39,000 on a bag, that’s the bag you should buy”, she said in an interview to Fashionista back in July. One of the main reasons is that despite the details that make it trendy, the bag follows a classic design and the quality of the materials is impeccable. “There’s enough design to make it interesting and beautiful but they truly are classic bags — and I think you also might be the only one who has it”, Brooks adds.
