Although Android and Apple seem to be battling over the same target, the two companies have two distinct audiences. It is the discovery that a market research firm has made after studying how different consumers’ relate to Android or Apple apps.
According to the report of the company, Android users are 20% less interested in apps than Apple consumers. The finding was made after studying the evolution of the two companies in the past four years, the strength and weaknesses of the competitors and the overall situation of the mobile ecosystem.
Analysts believe the discrepancy is due to the fact that Android and Apple users had different objectives in mind when purchasing smartphones from the two companies. Apple has always positioned its iPhone as a mini computer meant to run apps, whereas Android phones have always been perceived as upgrades from featured phones. The new Samsung Galaxy S line has determined a change in people’s conception as Android phones were no longer regarded as upgraded feature phones. Nevertheless, Android users are more inclined to use their devices as phones, instead of having other purposes.
The Android market has been subject to constant fragmentation in the past years, which might have determined a drop in apps usage. There are various devices with different features, functions and characteristics, so developers find it hard to create apps that work for all Android models.
Although Android apps are free and often more appreciated by consumers, analysts at Flurry claim the opposite. In their opinion, the low quality of Android apps might prevent owners from using them. Apple usually verifies the applications that they make available, whereas Google removes them only if users complain about them.
