After unveiling in January a pair of 3G Lumia handsets targeting emerging markets, Microsoft is coming now with something new. The company’s new devices are Lumia 640 and 640 XL. These new releases are also a pair of smartphones packed with affordable prices and higher quality components designed to attract customers in the Western markets who don’t want to spend a lot on a high-end device. Both phones, Lumia 640 and 640 XL, come with a present included. This present is a one-year subscription to Microsoft’s Office 365.
Microsoft Lumia 640 begins at the price of 159 dollars without a contract. If the customer opts for the LTE version, the device will cost 20 dollars or more. On the other side, Microsoft Lumia 640 XL starts at 209 dollars and with the LTE, the phone will be 239 dollars. It is a great price, if we compare it with the price of iPhone 6, which starts at 640 dollars without a contract. It looks like Microsoft, the world’s largest software company, thinks that a market made up of first-time smartphone buyers or cost-conscious shoppers, is a good way to build a foundation of users for its Windows Phone mobile operating system. Microsoft decided to launch higher quality smartphones at an affordable price.
“The sweet spot is at the high end of the prepaid market or low end of the contract segment,” said Ifi Majid, director of the phone marketing team at Microsoft. However, Microsoft is not the first company that thinks this way. Chain’s Xiaomi, has increased its sales by releasing Android smartphones and tablets by the same concept. However, compared with Microsoft, Xiaomi doesn’t sell its devices in the US. Besides Xiaomi, other Chinese companies like ZTE and Huawei, have stepped up with qualitative components and features, which have the general price range of the Microsoft Lumia 640 and 640 XL.
Microsoft Lumia 640 seems like an upgrade over the Lumia 635, with a 5-inch HD display, an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, an option for dual-SIM card slots and a 1-megapixel front-facing camera. The higher end Lumia 640 XL comes with a 5.7-inch display, a larger 720-pixel HD display, a 13-megapixel camera with Zeiss optics and 5-megapixel wide-angle front-facing camera. It also comes with a bigger 3,000 mAh battery.
