Martin Sheen, the father of famous actor Charlie Sheen, decided to talk about his son’s latest shocking confession. Charlie Sheen recently revealed that he is HIV positive. Well, Martin said to be extremely proud of his son for being courageous enough to make this public confession.
Martin Sheen talked to Naples Daily News and said that he watched his son’s confession on Today show. “I couldn’t believe the level of courage I was witnessing, and that it was my son,” Martin said.
“He had been leading up to this sort of story for several months, and we kept encouraging him to do it,” he went on to add. Martin also went on to say that Charlie tried to postpone this moment as much as possible.
“And he kept backing away and backing away because it was like going to his own execution, I guess,” the actor said.
Martin Sheen went on to explain that the family had no idea that Charlie was willing to make the confession during his Today show interview. “I saw him Saturday night, my wife and I went to see him, to make sure he knew we were behind him, and if he wanted me to go, I would have canceled this event. He said, no, this was his and his alone,” Martin said.
Martin Sheen admitted that his son has been having his issues, but of course, as a father he can only support him. Actually, the 75 year old actor got quite emotional during his interview. “As a father, I dare say that if I were to ask, just a general question in this room, how many of you have children or spouses or nieces, nephews, uncles, clients, who are dealing with drugs or alcohol. I dare say that there isn’t a person in here that wouldn’t raise their hand.”
Martin Sheen went on to say that he wants to raise awareness on the fact that addition is a disease and addicts need support to be cured. Martin concluded that addicts should not be seen differently, but they should be supported.
