LG has already pre-announced the Watch Urbane, its flagship smartwatch for 2015, which will be presented in Barcelona next week. It looks like more details have been revealed ahead of the Mobile World Congress. It seems that the Watch Urbane has a second LTE-powered variant and it doesn’t come with Android Wear. LG Watch Urbane LTE runs on a new proprietary wearable platform from LG.
LG Watch Urbane LTE is similar with the recently-announced LG Watch Urbane. It looks and sounds like it and it features a fancy-look with an LTE slapped on the end. The interesting fact is that LG Watch Urbane LTE comes with a whole bunch of new features that Android Wear isn’t capable of yet. For example, it features mobile payment technology via NFC, like Apple Watch, stand-alone phone calls and messaging without a smartphone, like Samsung Gear S.
Beside this new features, LG’s newest device runs a new software powered by WebOS and it is known as “LG Wearable Platform Operating Systems.” The South Korean multinational electronics company declared that this platform system will be used to power all of LG’s future “proprietary wearable products.” Looks like LG is branching off beyond Android Wear, just like Samsung with Tizen. LG also declared that the smartwatch will run some similar core functions as the Android Wear-based LG Watch Urbane.
Looking at its features on paper, the LG Watch Urbane LTE is a very powerful product. It can send and receive messages, make and answer calls, make push-to-talk calls like walkie-talkie with other phones over the same network, even acts as a safety device: one of three buttons on the side activates emergency call number. LG Watch Urbane LTE is the only smartwatch on the market that support LTE instead of 3G. This is a huge step for smartwatch technology and also for LGE.
“The LG Watch Urbane LTE is an example of the kind of innovation that’s possible when you’re the industry leader in LTE technology,” said Juno Cho, LG’s President and CEO. The LG Watch Urbane LTE comes with the same 1.3-inch round 320×320 P-OLED display, 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 400 processor and 4GB of onboard storage. Beside LG Watch Urbane, LTE version also has a bunch of adds, such as LTE antenna, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, NFC and a larger 700mAh battery. The pricing is currently unavailable.
