In an interview with critic Elvis Mitchell, actor Joaquin Phoenix recently called the Oscars “bullshit”. The star of “The Master” says the Oscars are “utter bullshit”, but he might just be the fox complaining the grapes are sour.
Before Joaquin Phoenix told Elvis Mitchell he has no desire to win an Oscar, “The Master” was not looking that good in ratings. But his recent interview denigrating the Oscars, makes the movie and Joaquin Phoenix interesting enough to actually win a nomination in the Academy Award race.
“Interview Magazine”’s film critic Elvis Mitchell recently talked with Joaquin Phoenix about his acting career and latest movie, “The Master”. Joaquin Phoenix plays Freddie Quell, a veteran of the World War II, who meets Lancaster Dodd, a charismatic author that draws all characters in.
In the meanwhile, Freddie Quell seems to be in a constant state of confusion, something that in the beginning of the movie had Joaquin Phoenix frustrated because there was “nothing solid or consistent” about him. Although Joaquin Phoenix says he’s not interested in the Oscars, the interview with Elvis Mitchell has surely made “The Master” a lot more interesting. The film critic himself believes “The Master” is Oscar-material.
“So what are you going to do when they put you on the awards circuit for The Master?” asks Mitchell. “You’re out of your mind, dude. You’re out of touch with what has happened” the actor reacts. Asked if he thinks “The Master” won’t get any nominations, Joaquin Phoenix said the Oscars are “bullshit”.
“I think it’s total, utter bullshit, and I don’t want to be a part of it. I don’t believe in it. It’s a carrot, but it’s the worst-tasting carrot I’ve ever tasted in my whole life. I don’t want this carrot” said Joaquin Phoenix. He went on explaining that the Oscars are “totally subjective” and are “pitting people against each other”.
“It was one of the most uncomfortable periods of my life when Walk the Line was going through all the awards stuff and all that” the actor confessed. “I never want to have that experience again/ I don’t know how to explain it (…) but I just don’t ever want to get comfortable with that part of things” Joaquin Phoenix added.
