The results of famous actress Joan Rivers’ autopsy have just been revealed. Apparently, the star died of low blood oxygen. The cause which led to her death has previously been suspected, but it has only been confirmed now.
Julie Bolcer, a NY medical examiner, revealed the results of the official autopsy in a statement. “OCME [Office of the Chief Medical Examiner] has completed its investigation. The cause of Ms. Rivers’ death is anoxic encephalopathy due to hypoxic arrest during laryngoscopy and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with propofol sedation for evaluation of voice changes and gastroesophageal reflux disease. The manner of death is therapeutic complication,” the statement said.
Following the announcement, it has been revealed that the Manhattan clinic where the star underwent the procedure might be shut down by the beginning of next year. The New York Post reported that the clinic may be at a huge risk of being shut down by New York state health officials. It has been reported that the license of the clinic will be terminated on January 7th, 2015. The reason for this is the fact that the clinic no longer meets the requirements to function.
The medical problems of Joan Rivers started at the end of August, when the star underwent a procedure at this clinic in Manhattan. Although this should have been just a simple routine check-up, the 81 year old star went into cardiac arrest. The comedian was transported to the emergency room, but unfortunately nothing could be done for her.
It has been claimed that the health complications might have been caused by the use of anesthesia drug propofol, which actually is the same drug that was involved in the death of popular pop singer Michael Jackson.
Joan Rivers passed away only about one week later. Melissa Rivers, the comedian’s daughter, made no comments at this point. However, she is expected to take legal action against the clinic where her mom had her check-up. “We continue to be saddened by our tragic loss and grateful for the enormous outpouring of love and support from around the world,” a statement from Melissa said.
