J.R. Martinez is the winner of “Dancing with the Stars” season 13. The current season of the show ended with the couple J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff taking home the Mirror Ball Trophy.
This season was probably one of the most emotional ones, leading up to even controversial behavior that spiced it up now and then. Both J.R., army veteran and former “All My Children” actor, and Karina, professional dancer, were crowned champions, outclassing in their way to the top 11 couples.
J.R.’ s first reaction to the results was to thank their fans who were always close and kept voting for them throughout the 10 weeks of the show. “Thank you America for believing in us”, he added.
His second thanks went to his partner who supported him and took him to the final win. In return, Karina described J.R. as an amazing partner and was happy to have been part of his first winning of the trophy.
The second part of the “Dancing with the Stars” grand finale which took place on Tuesday had three pairs competing. Shockingly enough, Ricki Lake and Derek Hough, three times winner of the Mirror Ball Trophy, were eliminated in the first round, after performing their favorite dance of the entire season. The outcome was unexpected as they finished the first hour of the show as top on the leaderboard with 30 additional points from the judges.
Ricki was very happy with her performance during the show and loved every minute of her recent experience. “I hope I made my children proud, my fiancé and my family”, she said. She lost over 20 pounds while practicing for the competition.
The second dance of the finals, the Instant Samba, opposed Rob Kardashian with partner Cheryl Burke and J.R. Martinez with Karina Smirnoff. The judges rewarded both pairs with a perfect score and it was the viewers’ votes that made the difference in the end.
The 28-year-old veteran never thought he could win the show as he considered he was less famous than some of the other celebrities, including: Lakers star Metta World Peace, former “The Hills” beauty Kristin Cavallari, stylist Carson Kressley, transgender activist Chaz Bono and talk show host Ricki. Yet, his emotional and dramatic life story, which he shared with the public bit by bit each show, and his dancing skills constant improvement won him a solid pool of fans and the Trophy.
“Dancing with the Stars” returns on ABC with its 14th season on March 19 2012.
