Honda has just revealed that the number of vehicles affected by the faulty Takata airbags is much bigger than imagined at first. So, the famous car maker revealed that about 6 million vehicles were traced to be affected at this point.
Honda is increasing the number of vehicles affected by Takata airbag recall in the United States. The news was confirmed on Friday. Initially, Honda believed that a number of 2.8 million vehicles were affected by this issue. The defect can lead to the explosion of the airbags, which can shoot metal into the cabin, causing this way fatal injuries to the driver or passengers.
It has been reported that this serious defect has already killed no less than five people in Honda vehicles. Four cases have been registered in the United States. Although Honda revealed that 6 million vehicles are affected, the number might still change, as Honda is in the process of determining exactly what vehicles have the faulty inflators. Moreover, the company has to determine if they are only located on the driver’s side or they are also affecting the front passenger airbag.
Once Honda finishes its internal investigation, the company will announce all car owners that their vehicles have to be brought in for repairs. Honda will let owners of affected vehicles know exactly how to proceed. Honda allows car owners to verify if their vehicles are among the affected ones on their online platform.
Naturally, Honda is not the only car marker affected by this issue, although it has recalled the most vehicles of all. More than 11 million vehicles in the United States are believed to be affected by this defect. This includes cars produced by Toyota, Mazda, Nissan, BMW, Ford, Mitsubishi, Subaru and Chrysler. The defect is extremely serious and car makers need to make sure that their vehicles are as safe as possible for all owners.
It is yet to see how many cars will finally be recalled in the US, but also in other places around the world. Meanwhile, the investigation continues.
