Grammy Awards 2012 Winners Pay Tribute To Whitney Houston

Celebrities and fans waiting for this year’s edition of the Grammy Awards were surely expecting the evening to have a whole different vibe. Instead, all those taking part had to change and adapt the registry as Whitney Houston’s death took the world of music by storm. With that in mind, the event organizers tried not to leave the artist’s death to overshadow the real purpose of the ceremony, while Grammy Awards 2012 winners decided to pay their own tribute to Whitney Houston.

Without being any surprise, Adele took over the Grammys this year. Her much awaited recovery and first performance after her throat surgery met everyone’s expectations, both in terms of singing and winning awards. Adele won Record of the Year for “Rolling in the Deep” and Album of the Year for “21”.  As a matter of fact, Adele won in all six categories in which she was nominated.

Best rap performance went to “Otis,” by Jay-Z and Kanye West, while the best rock performance went to Foo Fighters for “Walk”.

Organizers tried hard not to leave Whitney Houston’s death overshadow the ceremony. The even started just as planned, with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performing a new single called “We Take Care of Our Own”. Immediately after that, LL Cool J came forward and addressed Whitney Houston’s death.

“There is no way around this. We’ve had a death in our family” he said. “And so at least for me, for me, the only thing that feels right is to begin with a prayer for a woman we loved – for our fallen sister, Whitney Houston”.

Homage might be the right word to describe the 54th Grammy Awards. The Beach Boys, Glen Campbell, Etta James, Don Cornelius and of course Whitney Houston were all performers who had received homages in more than one act.

The event organizers played a video montage of performers who had died in the past year, featuring names from Amy Winehouse to Whitney Houston. Jennifer Hudson paid a tribute to Whitney Houston singing her biggest hit: “I Will Always Love You”. She was accompanied by a piano and ended her song with a final line: “We will always love you”.
