New reports indicate that Google has a quite curious plan. The company actually is planning on shutting down Orkut. Apparently, this decision has already been taken and will be put in practice by Google on September 30.
If you are not familiar with the word Orkut, you should know that this actually is the first social networking site that was developed by Google. However, the site will cease from existing after the month of September, decision taken at this point after no less than10 years of activity.
Google claimed that they will have to shut it down, despite the fact that the service still is quite popular in both India and in Brazil. Still, overall, the service has failed to gain the success and the popularity that was obtained by Facebook, which naturally is the biggest competition for all social media sites, on this segment.
“Over the past decade, YouTube, Blogger and Google+ have taken off, with communities springing up in every corner of the world. Because the growth of these communities has outpaced Orkut’s growth, we’ve decided to bid Orkut farewell,” a statement coming from Google revealed.
Orkut was launched in 2004. In fact, this is the exact same year when Facebook was created, although the first failed to achieve the same success as Facebook did. Currently, Facebook is the most popular social network in the world. It is estimated to have a number of 1.28 million users.
Of course, Google is now willing to focus all its actions and attention on Google+, which is proving to enjoy an increased popularity nowadays. Most likely, Google wants this community to grow. Google avoided to reveal how many users Orkut currently has. Still, numerous users have taken Twitter to show their sorrow for the fact that Orkut will become unavailable in just a few months. This is without a doubt a proof of the fact that Orkut still has numerous fans.
