Francia Raisa, Selena Gomez’s best friend, who actually decided to undergo surgery to donate a kidney to the famous singer talked about this whole experience. Francia talked about this subject during an interview with Savannah Guthrie.
She said that Selena and she were living together at the time when she realized that the famous singer was dealing with some serious health issues. “One day she came home and she was emotional. I hadn’t asked anything. I knew she hadn’t been feeling well,” Felicia said. “She couldn’t open a water bottle one day. She chucked it and she started crying. And I said, ‘What’s wrong?’ and that’s when she told me. And she goes, ‘I don’t know what to do. The list is seven to ten years long.’ It just vomited out of me: I was like, ‘Of course I’ll get tested.'”
Francia also said that the whole procedure took place in an emergency process, meaning that she had all the tests done during the course of one day, and she knew immediately that she was a compatible donor for Selena, so they could continue with the procedure. Francia said that she and Selena spent together the day before the surgery, but admitted that she was a bit scared because there is always the risk of not waking up.
Francia was fine immediately after the surgery, but we cannot say the same thing about Selena. The young singer said that her doctors informed her that she had to go back into surgery because her new kidney was turning around inside her. Her second surgery lasted no less than six hours. However, she managed to overcome the issue with the help of her doctors.
The two ladies also explained that one of the most difficult parts of the whole process has been the recovery part. The two were only able to walk an hour each day, while the rest of the time they had to remain in bed. They remained together during the recovery process, as well. Francia and Selena have been best friends since 2009.
