Shakira’s ex-boyfriend, Antonio de la Rua, has filed a lawsuit against the singer asking her to pay him $100 million for damages. The former manager claims the singer refused to pay him his share of profits since they broke up in 2010 even though he continued to work for her, New York Post reports.
Antonio de la Rua may have once been head over heels for Shakira, but those days are long gone. The Argentinian manager claims he has been aggrieved by the international star as she refused to pay him the share of profits he deserved for making Shakira the successful brand she is today.
Shakira and de la Rua started dating in 2000 and in 2004, the singer agreed to let Antonio at the helm of her business. The decision was adopted after Shakira’s 2004 tour turned out to be a major disappointment. Thanks to de la Rua’s contribution, the star earned tens of millions from worldwide tours and signed numerous deals including a $300 million gig with Live Nation.
In 2010, the two lovebirds decided to put an end to their relationship, but they nevertheless, continued to stay friends for the sake of the Shakira brand. One year later, the singer fired de la Rua with the help of her legal representative and refused to pay him any profits ever since. As a result, the Argentinian manager has sued the interpreter asking her to pay $100 million in exchange of his profits. The lawsuit will be dealt with by the judges of the Manhattan Supreme Court.
Shakira did not make any comments about her ex-boyfriend’s lawsuit. She appears to have moved on from her relationship with de la Rua as she is now romantically involved with Spanish football player Gerard Pique. The two are expecting their first baby together.
