Singer and philanthropist Dolores Hope, the wife of late legendary comedy actor Bob Hope, died on Monday at her home in Los Angeles. She was 102 years old. The family did not give many details on her death, Associated Press reports.
The Hope family spokesman announced on Monday that singer Dolores Hope passed away of natural causes at her Los Angeles home. She was 102 years old. The statement did not include other details.
The Los Angeles archbishop, Jose H. Gomez, said that her death is deeply regretted. “Both the entertainment world and the church have lost a woman of profound faith, gifted musical talent and dedication”, he said.
Both Dolores and her husband, Bob, had long lives and died of natural causes. Comedian Bob Hope died on July 27, 2003, of old age. He was 100 years old. They were married for 69 years. The couple met in 1933. It was the evening of Bob Hope’s first Broadway performance and one of his friends took him to Vogue Club to “hear a pretty girl sing”. The girl, Dolores Reade, fascinated him. One year later they got married. She stopped singing in clubs. Instead she joined him by singing in his shows. And then, she retired. “I thought I’d better stay home and take care of Bob,” she explained in 1997.
Dolores never had any kids of her own, but she adopted four: Linda, Anthony, Kelly and Nora.
Nancy Reagan praises the memory of the late Hope couple. “Together, they brought countless hours of laughter and cheer to Americans everywhere.” “I’ll never forget what a wonderful singer she was”, Rip Taylor said.
In 1982, Dolores Hope explained the way she sees life: “I like being with people, but I also need to have my time alone”, she said. “I think it’s terribly important to have some time during the day when you stop and take all the energy that you have given out and pull it back in, find the source of your energy. Then you work from there.”
