When Clint Eastwood took the stage the night of Mitt Romney’s official GOP nomination, the empty chair speech went viral and had fans confused. In a recent interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Clint Eastwood said he’d do the empty chair speech again, in the end he was just trying to enjoy himself.
A few weeks ago, at the Republican National Convention, Clint Eastwood shocked people. He did. It was his confusing speech that left a lot baffled and wondering whether the actor and director was too old for public appearances. In the end, Clint Eastwood is 82 years old. But Clint Eastwood recently told Ellen he loved doing the senile man bit.
If you had any doubts, Clint Eastwood is one very particular 82-year-old man. Sure, he’s endorsing Mitt Romney for president, but that’s not what we’re talking about right now. The man walked on the stage and talked with an empty chair pretending it was Barack Obama. While everybody thought he lost his mind, Clint Eastwood was in fact just having a good time.
“You got a lot of attention for that – but you don’t care, do you?” Ellen DeGeneres asked Clint Eastwood about his empty chair speech. “No”, the actor answered bluntly. “It was an interesting reaction, actually” the 82-year-old man said smiling. “The Democrats who were watching thought I was going senile, and the Republicans knew I was…It was actually just trying to enjoy myself” Clint Eastwood confessed.
The 82-year-old actor and director also said he’d do the empty chair speech all over again, although he’d “probably say something else”. But the message would be the same: “I just wanted people to take the idolizing factor out of every contestant out there and just look at the work and look at the background, and then make a judgment on that”.
Clint Eastwood also confessed he thought about the empty chair bit just five seconds before it was time for him to get on stage. “When you walk out there and you get an audience of 10,000 people that are extremely enthusiastic and your mind goes blank” the actor added.
In the meanwhile, Clint Eastwood has been performing as an actor for the first time since 1993, in Robert Lorenz’s “In the Line of Fire”.
