DIY Christmas Part I: Stocking

Creating your own Christmas decorations may be difficult, but it sure is rewarding. Your Christmas stocking may not always have the same size, they may not be as perfect as the ones you see in stores and truth be told, you rarely get to hang them around the house. Not to mention the disaster you cause by spreading fabric, glue and glitter all over the house. Yet, your handmade stocking acquire your personal touch, they reflect part of your personality and they give you the feeling there’s nothing you can’t accomplish. Plus, they make great gifts when you get tired of them, so here’s how you can design your DIY Christmas stocking.

1. Choosing the fabric is the first and most important step you need to accomplish. Since these are Christmas decorations, you should probably use a green or red fabric. The material doesn’t have to be new; you can also reuse old cloths for this particular project.

2. Fold the fabric in two parts and draw a stocking outline, using a white chalk. The shape doesn’t have to be perfect, but it should, nevertheless, bear the resemblance of socks.

3. Once you have finished drawing the outline, you may start cutting the fabric following the chalk line.

4. Take any type of thread you like and start sewing on the back of the fabric, that is, the part that you don’t want to be visible. Make sure you closely follow the stocking pattern, so you won’t leave any parts out. The top of the stocking needs not be sewed because you will need the gap to fill the Christmas sock with gifts.

5. In the end, you only have to turn the Christmas stocking right-side-out and you’re all good to go. You can also purchase ready-made emblems illustrating stars, angels or Santas and sew them on top of the fabric to embellish the design of your stocking.

6. If you plan on hanging the stocking, you should furnish them with small hangers at the top. Smaller socks may be filled with cotton wool and hanged on the Christmas three together with other handmade decorations.

Pizza Hut Launches Pizza Scented Perfume

With Pizza Hut launching a perfume with a pizza scent, there’s one question left to ask yourself: do you love pizza enough to be “wearing” it?

Here’s something the “haute-couture” perfume industry isn’t going to like: Pizza Hut is releasing a fragrance of its own. Guess what the scent is? Pizza…what else? That’s a good idea if you’re so in love with pizza you’d like to smell like a fresh Supreme Pizza. Mmm…that delicious smell of mushrooms, pepperoni and Italian sausage. Mmm… and those red onions…Who wouldn’t love to smell like that for all special occasions…or you know everyday-go-to-work…

It all began with a joke writes Business Insider. When Pizza Hut Canada posted on its Facebook page the idea, fans reacted saying they would actually buy it. Now, that Pizza Hut got serious about making its very own pizza fragrance, I don’t really see how well a blind date would go when the man (or woman?!) will smell like a hot Calzone with the works.

For the moment, only the first 100 fans who reacted to Pizza Hut’s idea will get the perfume. I’m betting they’d rather be getting a fresh Pizza Hut pizza whenever they want, instead of simply smelling what it could have been a delicious pie.

“When our ad team at GRIP brought the idea to us, we absolutely loved it” said Beverley D’ Cruz, marketing and product development director for Pizza Hut Canada. “What better way to celebrate our Facebook fans than by providing them with a way to enjoy the fresh smell of Pizza Hut pizza whenever they want” she added.

So, what kind of pizza aroma is the Pizza Hut perfume? “It smells like dough with a little bit of seasoning added” said Adam Luck, GRIP managing director of digital. “We discovered it was hard to match the smell of freshly baked bread, but it smells somewhat close” Beverly D’Cruz added.

For the rest of us, craving the scent of fresh Pizza Hut pizza, the future is full of promise. “Will we be seeing Pizza Hut perfume in department stores any time soon? Only time will tell” the press release added.

Dress Like A Star On New Year’s Eve

You know what they say: for New Year’s Eve parties you need to dress to impress. So here’s how to dress like a star for a New Year’s Eve party you will never forget.

If you’ve been searching for 2012’s party wear trends for New Year’s Eve bashes, you must have noticed that the main advice is “Shine!”. Designers have outdone themselves once again with the fall/winter collections and have launched a few trends we have immediately fell in love with. This winter it’s all about being bold and comfortable in your own skin with your body. All women are beautiful and for New Year’s Eve party you will shine too.

Dressing like a star for the New Year’s Eve party isn’t just something you learn by reading a guide. Knowing about trends is surely helpful and so is getting advice from stylists, but even when your look is flawless, if you’re not feeling it, it will show. So remember, fashion and great style is all about attitude. Be comfortable with what you’re wearing and for one night let that shy girl go wild.

The most popular choice in party wear for New Year’s Eve are sequins. Obviously, it’s not a surprise. What is however surprising is how designers have played with sequins this year. Even if you think it’s literally too much sparkle, just try on a dress with sequins. You’re going to love how the sequins catch the light. Be careful, however, because every type of dress has a different effect on your silhouette. If you have the body, choose a mermaid dress with sequins like the one Crystal Renn is wearing or a short dress without sleeves with patterns that hug the body (Kylie Minogue).

You can also choose a stretch sequined fabric to add more curves to your body, like Eva Longoria did with a dress created by This Alice + Olivia. “The gleaming stretch fabric draws attention to every part of your body, making it the perfect choice for anyone who wants to amp up their curves” says celebrity stylist Kithe Brewster.

But don’t overdo it. Don’t add even more sparkle to your New Year’s Eve sequin dress, unless you’re planning to blind people. So how do we accessorize a sequin dress? Try for instance a red clutch if you’re wearing a silver sequins dress and closed toe black patent leather or suede pumps. As for jewelry, forget about necklaces and bracelets. Just wear your beautiful diamond earrings, in the end they are a girl’s best friends!

Dressing like a star is obviously something that takes a lot of time, but any other flawless attire does too. Plus, when it comes to choosing an amazing outfit for your New Year’s Eve bash, dressing like a star is what will get you that kiss from the guy you’ve been eyeing for so long.

Party Wear Trends For December 2012

December is the dedicated month of some of the most glamorous parties throughout the year. It’s time to sparkle, it’s time to be glamorous and most of all it’s time to look your best. Whether it’s a Christmas party or the crazy New Year’s Eve bash, it won’t hurt you to know a few of the top trends for party wear in December 2012.

All women have one thing in mind when it comes to December’s parties: looking their best. So there’s a lot of pressure for the outfit to be flawless and obviously in line with trends. As a matter of fact, if you’re not feeling too inspired about the dress you’re going to wear at a December bash, looking at fashion trends for the season is a great way to start.

Top dress trends for December 2012:
When it comes to this year’s fashion trends, designers have had it all: romantic, delicate, natural or opulent and powerful. By the way, the color is what makes you pop, so instead of a little black dress kind of thing, rather go for a little red dress, or purple, or neon blue or full of sparkles. Obviously picking the right dress for the Christmas or New Year’s Eve bash has to take into account the formality of the event.

But taking a look at designers’ numerous interpretation of trends, you should find just enough models to find the right one. In a nutshell, if you’re thinking about wearing a red dress for your New Year’s Eve bash, take a look at fall/winter collections by Giorgio Armani, Kakaan, Christian Dior and Donna Karan.

On the overall, the rule of thumb when it comes to party wear for December parties is go glam. That means it’s time to wear sequins, metallic accessories and colors, open back dresses, opulent flower embroidery and luxurious fabrics. Just check out Etro, Osman, Valentino, Balmain, Lanvin, Dolce & Gabbana and Leonard and you’ll see for yourself how royal velvet, silk, lace embroidery and jewelry embellishments will feel.

However, if we’re talking about glam dresses for December 2012 bashes, it’s good to know designers have awarded sequins their very own spot under the spotlight. Look at Versace, Naeem Khan, Elie Saab, Antonio Berardi and Jason Wu to see what we mean. Their collections have given sequins a whole new dimension thanks to innovative design.

Three Thanksgiving Staples That Will Make Your Hair Gorgeous

Thanksgiving Day is a day of recognition, so why not use three of the most common holiday staples to thank your hair for pulling through whatever styling ideas you might have in mind. Cranberry, pumpkin and sweet potatoes are not only tasty, but they can be great allies, as well, when it comes to hydrating your locks.

All holidays end with a pile of leftovers, but you don’t necessarily have to throw everything in the dustbin as they may be used for other purposes. Cranberries, for instance, make a great conditioner for colored hair, especially red hues. All you have to do is take the cranberry juice and use it to rinse your mane. You don’t have to follow a special process for that; just wash and condition your hair the way you normally do and then, use the cranberry juice to rinse your hair for a couple of minutes. Once the juice was uniformly applied on all locks, you may use lukewarm water to give a final rinse to the hair.

There are many ways you can use the pumpkin besides the creepy Halloween decorations or the sweet pie. Since pumpkin is a rich source of vitamin A and potassium it can also be used as a conditioner that moisturizes and stimulates hair growth. For that, you will have to mix two cups of pumpkin with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 of yogurt and apply the mixture on damp hair. The deep conditioner should be left to process for 15 minutes and then washed regularly with warm water.

While the other two foods may be mixed with other ingredients to create conditioners for external use, sweet potatoes work best when administered internally. They are rich in beta-carotene, a substance that is essential for cell growth and, consequently, hair growth, so you should not feel sorry for piling them up on your plate.

Jennifer Lawrence Says She’s Obese By Hollywood Standards

Jennifer Lawrence or Katniss Everdeen for “The Hunger Games” fans is calling things as she sees them. In the December issue of Elle, Jennifer Lawrence talks about relationship, maturity and how she’s obese by Hollywood standards.

At 22 years old, Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most popular actresses in the world. “Hunger Games” was a worldwide success and since the movie premiered, everybody has been keeping a close eye on the cast. Elle sat down Jennifer Lawrence for an interview about her love life, maturity and being a role model to her legions of teenager fans.

Just like many other people before her, fame has two sides when it comes to Jennifer Lawrence. One is being insanely popular and rich, while the other is being scrutinized for her weight. “Hunger Games” critics had a lot to say about Jennifer Lawrence’s body at 21 playing a character who was only 16.

“In Hollywood, I’m obese” Jennifer Lawrence told Elle. “I’m considered a fat actress” she added, but that doesn’t mean she is going to starve herself “for a part”. “I don’t want little girls to be like, ‘Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I’m going to skip dinner. That’s something I was really conscious of during training, when you’re trying to get your body to look exactly right” the 22-year-old actress explained.

And preparing to play Katniss Everdeen wasn’t all that easy, since she got the character who has to fight for her life throughout the movie. “I was trying to get my body to look fit and strong – not thin and underfed” the actress said as she confessed she did have to change a lot of things, including the way she runs.

“I’m pigeon-footed…so I decided to learn how to run with my feet straight and then they ended up just taping my ankles to make my feet go out” Jennifer Lawrence was revealing on “Good Morning America” in March.

To producers and film critics, Jennifer Lawrence has sent a strong message: she’s obese by Hollywood standards and she knows it, but that doesn’t mean she’s going to put her body through unnecessary ordeals. “I eat like a caveman. I’ll be the only actress who doesn’t have anorexia rumors”.

Miley Cyrus Wears Nicki Minaj Costume For Halloween

Halloween is a great time for celebrities to dress up as other celebrities and poke fun at each other. Miley Cyrus wore a Nicki Minaj costume for Halloween this year, Ellen DeGeneres dressed up as Sofia Vergara while other celebrities enjoyed their holiday with their family.

When celebrities poke fun at each other, it always gets very close to a fireworks explosion. Nicki Minaj is not the kind of celebrity that others can mess with without some payback. But Miley Cyrus is 19 and restless in sparking controversy with fashion and style choices. This Halloween, Miley Cyrus’ Nicki Minaj Halloween costume was the most talked about, even more popular than Kim Kardashian’s blond mermaid outfit.

The 19-year-old singer looked great in the Nicki Minaj Halloween costume. She had the hair, the lips, the attitude and even the vocabulary as she tweeted her Nicki Minaj costume and called the rapper “you a stupid hoe”. Don’t start looking for the exact outfit Miley Cyrus’ Nicki Minaj because the former Disney star seemed to have created it from various other looks.

But in the end, Miley Cyrus got it right. She even had the butt pads, outrageous makeup and huge eyelashes to fine tune the whole look. Even Nicki Minaj herself seemed impressed by what Miley Cyrus pulled off.

We don’t know what Halloween costume Nicki Minaj chose but the 29-year-old rapper told Ryan Seacrest she’s “going to probably go as Miley Cyrus…because she is going as me and I just saw her picture on Twitter”. Nicki Minaj seemed pretty confident she could “do the short blonde buzz-cut like Miley” but it’s going to be hard to hide all those curves.

Nicki Minaj is currently touring in the UK with her “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded” gig. She was recently spotted in London close to a wardrobe malfunction as Nicki Minaj went for a bra top that was hard to miss. Wearing thigh-hugging jeans, a small denim jacket and a denim cap, Nicki Minaj went all in with a colorful bra that surely had some British men avert their eyes embarrassed.

First Train The Brain, Then Lose Weight

Losing weight and keeping those pounds off is challenging for any dieter. A new diet however reveals a new way of revamping your figure: first you train the brain, then you lose the weight.

A new study by Stanford Prevention Research Center scientists says that the best way to lose weight is to train your brain. Apparently this is the best way to avoid side-stepping your diet or gain back the weight you lost. So to prevent yo-yo dieting or abandoning your diet, researchers say it’s best for you to take two months before starting the weight loss plan to teach your brain how to deal with it.

The study published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology had 267 mostly obese women separated into 2 groups. The women in the first group began a weight loss program immediately, whereas those in the second group had two months to prepare for the actual diet. During that time, the women in the second group learned how to keep track of their weight, bad and healthy habits and so on.

By the end of the dieting, women in the two groups lost almost the same number of pounds: about 17. However, during the next 12 months, women in the second group only gained back 3 pounds, whereas women in the first group, who didn’t train their brains, gained back an average of 7 pounds.

“Those eight weeks were like a practice run” said Michaela Kiernan, researcher with the Stanford School of Medicine. “We found that waiting those eight weeks didn’t make the women any less successful at losing weight. But even better, women who practiced first were more successful in maintaining that loss after a year”.

According to Dr. Kiernan, training the brain for two months relaxed women’s attention to their weight, but taught them how to maintain it. “Losing a significant amount of weight requires a lot of focused attention to what you’re doing, and most people can’t keep up that intensity over the long term” the lead author explained.

“For weight maintenance, we wanted something that would make the day-to-day experience positive while not requiring overwhelming amounts of effort” the scientist added.

During the brain training, women were taught how to control their portion sizes and find healthy foods for their high-calorie favorite meals. They were informed about the hurdles of dieting and had even a vacation from the program, when they could eat anything they wanted.

Britain Bans Natalie Portman Dior Ad

Britain decided to ban a Natalie Portman Dior ad for excessive use of airbrushing that regulators say it would mislead buyers.

Although it was rival company L’Oreal UK that alerted Britain’s Advertising Standards Authority that the Natalie Portman Dior mascara ad is misleading, it’s a good thing someone is taking action against this kind of marketing techniques. In the United States, as we recently learned from Leonardo DiCaprio’s girlfriend, airbrushing models is all about selling a story.

The new Dior Show New Look mascara ad features Natalie Portman donning lush, long, think lashes. The kind anybody hopes a simple tube of mascara would deliver. Unfortunately, that’s not the case, although the marketing campaign behind the mascara claims so.

According to the ad, the new Dior mascara will create a volume-multiplying effect lash by lash. “Lash-multiplying effect volume and care mascara. The miracle of a nano brush for an unrivalled lash creator effect. It delivers spectacular volume-multiplying effect, lash by lash” reads the Dior mascara ad featuring Natalie Portman.

L’Oreal UK immediately blamed Dior for using misleading and exaggerated claims to push the new product. As it turned out, the image used by Dior was originally meant to promote lipstick, but the marketing team thought it would work better for mascara, with a bit of Photoshop airbrushing that is.

Britain’s Advertising Standards Authority concluded that the airbrushing was conducted exactly on the area that is “directly relevant to the apparent performance of the mascara product being advertised”: the eyelashes. The ad watchdog agency eventually decided to ban the Natalie Portman Dior mascara ad for being misleading.

But Dior has a different take on things, saying the “digital retouching was nearly exclusively in relation to her [Natalie Portman’s] upper lashes”. The company added that the airbrushing “was primarily used to separate/increase the length and curve of a number of her lashes and to replace/fill a number of missing or damaged lashes, for a more stylized, uniform and tidy effect”. The company also explained it used “a minimal amount of retouching” to fix the increasing “thickness and volume of a number of her natural lashes”.

Pink Lost 55 Pounds After Daughter’s Birth

It’s a little depressing when celebrities switch from pregnant to six-pack abs in five months. How do they do it?! Pink lost 55 pounds after daughter’s birth in June. The “So What” singer looks amazingly fit on the cover of Shape magazine’s November issue.

In the November issue of Shape magazine Pink reveals a killer figure as she rocks six-pack abs right from the cover. The 33-year-old singer confessed she indulged during the pregnancy on all her favorite treats and was shocked how unattractive she felt. But her vegan diet and exercising helped Pink lose 55 pounds in just five months after her daughter was born.

“I thought I’d feel like a goddess” Pink told Shape magazine about her being pregnant. “They sell you on that sh*t, like you’ll never feel more feminine. Really, I just felt like a mess, but I kind of enjoyed that too” the 33-year-old added.

“Hell, yeah, I gained 55 pounds. I think my baby may be part cheesecake” Pink joked. “I ate a lot of cheesecake during those nine months. Also, anything sour, Sour Skittles, Sour Patch Kids, key lime pie” the “So What” singer added.

Just eight months after giving birth, Pink began working out to lose the baby weight. 55 pounds was not an easy job, but a daily regimen of cardio and strength exercises and a vegan diet eventually were successful. The secret to Pink’s shocking weight loss was a combination of power yoga, kickboxing and treadmill routine with asparagus, cous cous and brown rice meals.

Pink also had help from celebrity trainers Jillian Michaels and Jeanette Jenkins. “They both kicked my butt more than any other person I’ve worked out with” Pink told Shape magazine. “They’re both amazing, and their bodies were all the inspiration I needed to get back into shape” she added.

Now, Pink is back to her hard six-pack abs, something that she was often teased for. “I get a lot of flak for” it she confessed in 2011 in a blog post. “But I’m okay with it. I think it’s because I was a gymnast for eight years, from ages four to 12. My body was made before my bones were fully grown. Gymnasts are short, stocky, muscular powerhouses”.
