ADHD spotted in toddlers brain scans

New research results show that ADHD symptoms were spotted in the brainscans of toddlers. The physical and neurological symptoms imply a structure in the brain that plays an important role in the cognitive and movement control and that in children with ADHD is smaller, Health Day news announces.  

 The Kennedy Krieger in Baltimore used high resolution MRI to examine the brains of 26 preschoolers, of whom 13 had ADHD symptoms and 13 had no such symptoms. The difference spotted in the brain scans between the two groups was a smaller caudate nucleus, a structure found in the subcortical region of the brain. There was also found a correlation between the size of the caudate nucleus in children with ADHD – the smaller the structure, the greater the symptoms.

The leader of the research team, Mark Mahone, who is also the director of neuropsychology at the Institute, said that “this abnormal brain development sets the stage for the symptoms of ADHD that contribute to cognitive challenges and problems in school.”

The study’s findings, which were published on June 9th in the online edition of the Clinical Neuropsychologist journal, contribute to other research in the field on ADHD prevention and treatment. The article stated that earlier identification leads to “minimized impact of ADHD in the long-term”.

ADHD – Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder – is the most common child behavioral problem diagnosed in the United States. At present there are known 2 million cases in the States alone. The chronic condition that affects the children often persists during adulthood as well. Most people are diagnosed before turning 7 years old, but signs can be spotted as early as 2 years old. The symptoms include difficulty in completing tasks that take time, trouble in paying attention to detail, easily distracted by almost anything, forgetfulness, talking excessively and changing the subject often, being always on the go, restlessness. The boys and the girls can manifest differently, as the boys are more hyperactive and tend to not obey their parents and teachers. Girls are more inattentive, daydreaming a lot.

Although the treatments don’t cure the condition, it improves the behavior and children with ADHD can learn to control the symptoms through a series of measures and have a normal adult life.

Coffee reduces chances of getting pregnant

Regular coffee intake reduces the chances of getting pregnant, by inhibiting the circuit of the eggs from ovaries to uterus, study says. The experiments were conducted on animals but, as the scientists claim, they explain why women who drink coffee regularly reduce their chances of becoming mothers.

Coffee can make your mornings sunnier, it can give you energy throughout the hardest part of the day and can spoil you just as you get out of bed with its flavor. But drinking too much coffee can do more damage than good.

The study, which was conducted by a team of researchers at Nevada School of Medicine was reported in the British Journal of Pharmacology. The article reports that there have been made studies on mice that found an undermining of the activity of Fallopian tubes, that carry the eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. This affects fertility in a direct and negative way.

The tem of researchers, led by Prof. Sean Ward observed that specialized pacemaker cells suffered a decrease in activity when the mice were given caffeine. The pacemaker cells are involved in coordinating the Fallopian tubes contractions. Even though it is not clearly know how do the eggs travel from the ovaries to the womb ( what is their activity in the tubes) it is known that the contractions of the tube play a highly important role in their traveling. The scientists presume that cilia – hair-like projections found inside the tube walls that are very very small – that are found in the tubes, have the role of pushing the eggs along with the muscle contractions in the tube walls If the eggs don’t end up in the uterus, the female cannot get pregnant.

So the two activities of th tube that leads to pregnancy are the cilia moves and the muscle contractions. The scientists state, however, that the contractions are far more important. And if the caffeine reduces the contractions, it’s pretty clear why women who drink too much coffee may have fertility problems.

“This provides an intriguing explanation as to why women with high caffeine consumption often take longer to conceive than women who do not consume caffeine” says profferror Ward and explains what are the benefits of this discovery:
“As well as potentially helping women who are finding it difficult to get pregnant, a better understanding of the way Fallopian tubes work will help doctors treat pelvic inflammation and sexually-transmitted disease more successfully”.

Prom Date Helps Girl Overcome Fear of Transplant

Courtney Montgomery is a 16-year old teenager girl who strived with a serious medical condition that required heart transplant. It took another teenager who suffered from the same condition to make her change her mind about the surgery and accept it so she could lead a normal life.

At the age of 8, Courtney Montgomery, of Asheville, N.C., was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition that is characterized by thickened and hard – to – pump heart. The condition that leads to sudden death in young athletes has limited Courtney’s activities up to the point that last year not only that she had to give up cheerleading, but couldn’t go to school either and had to be schooled at home. Despite her mother’s struggle to shield her from the death prognostics of the doctors, Courtney became more depressed with each day.

A few months ago she was presented the possibility of heart transplant, but the girl wasn’t too confident about it. I was like, “No, I don’t want this. If I’m going to die, I’m going to die” she recalls. Due to her feelings of rejection, the possibility of the transplant working for her was minimized. Depression, anger and normal adolescent pangs can interfere with the results, according to Dr. Robert Jaquiss, pediatric heart surgery chief at Duke University Medical Center, where Courtney was operated on. Teenagers and young adult don’t cope very well with the follow-up care. Even though adolescents recover better in the first year after the surgery, in the long run they miss medication doses or check-ups. Plus, they have a tougher time with the medication’s side effects.

This didn’t look very appealing for 16-year-old Courtney so she had no intention of undergoing a heart transplant. Her mother, even though she had the Veto in the situation, was advised to take into account her daughter’s will. Social worker Shani Foy-Watson explained that if she had done that Courtney’s feelings of resentment would have been a huge obstacle in her recovery.

The best idea they had was to bring someone to meet Courtney, someone that was in the same situation as her. So they found A 17-year-old football player that underwent the same typeof surgery at the same hospital a few month earlier. He agreed to meet Courtney, told her about his experience and even asked her to the Prom a few weeks before her surgery. Yes, he made her change her mind. Despite all the advice ad the reasoning from the family, friends and doctors, nothing “hit home like when Josh would tell me, `I have the same scars you do and this is how it felt and this is how I feel now.”

Courtney had her transplant a month ago and is now recovering. Her mom is helping her with the treatment which includes taking 33 pills a day. Still, Courtney is happy to have done it: “Now I look back, I realize I wasn’t thinking the way I should have been.”

Sexy Shoes Lead To Ugly Feet

Recent studies show that 39 % of women wear high heels everyday and 75 % of them already have foot problems due to the pretty shoes.

Dr. Pedro Cosculluela, from The Methodist Hospital in Houston, says that “many women wear shoes to work every day that look great but they are simply too small.”. The shape of the shoe and the height of the heel are leading to serious foot conditions. The most common are foot pain, bunions, arthritic big toes, calluses, hammer toes and plantar. “ The biggest problems we encounter are related to the height of the heel and/or the narrowness of the toe boxwarts” says Dr. Pedro Cosculluela, who is an orthopedic surgeon.

The Narrow Toe Box, even though it look great, it makes women force their feet into it. The poor fit then leads to foot deformities, such as bunions, hammer toes and calluses. The deformities worsen in time, until the big tos loses its ability to sustain the weight of the body, which triggers a lot of pain. It is not a process that happens over night, but it’s happening.  The bunions are bumps on te inside line of the big toe. It causes deviation of the toe to the opposite direction (left). It is caused by shes that are too small, or have a narrow box. They can also be determined genetically. When bunions determin deviation of the foot, it can then cause hammer toes and calluses.

High heels are also responsible for toe deviation. Ina ddition, they can trigger the development of tight calf muscles, which in time leads to ther foot problems: plantar fasciitis, flat feet and Achiller tendonitis.

Dr. Pedro Cosculluela says that it is, of course, better to prevent than to treat. Usually treatment requires a lot of time, unpleasant procedures and even surgery. One way to prevent foot problems is “a simple test to find out if your shoes will fit before you buy them”, says the doctor. Take a pen and a large enough piece of paper to draw around your bare foot. Then put the shoe over the drawing and if your toes stick out of the shoe, they are too small. If you want to buy the shoe, look for a bigger size which will give you more comfort. If you already own the shoe, throw it away!

McDonald Clown To Retire

After 40 years in the business, the popular McDonald clown, Ronald, is forced to retire due to accusations that he promotes an unhealthy food brand, pushing kids to eat French fries and hamburgers.

Ronald McDonald of one of the world’s most recognizable clowns and has been the fast food chain’s mascot since 1971. Now, Nutrition advocates ask the company to renounce him, not because he may be scary, but because he promotes unhealthy food, which contributes to global child obesity. In the United States one third of the population is obese and about half of it is overweight. In the last decades, the number pf obese children has risen as well, reaching 17%.

Health experts want Ronals and his friends out of the way of the children. Yes, they are not only asking Ronald to retire, but also his friends, The Hamburglar, Grimace, Mayor McCheese and Captain Crook. They say the company still sells french fires in Happy Meals and al other kid-friendly meals. Corporate Accountability International is leading the charge and is planning to introduce a resolution in order for the clown to retire so there wil be no temptation for the children to eat at McDonalds.
One of the most important sustainers of the reslution, who also took part in creating it, is professor Steven Rothschild, from Rush Medical College. He asked the clown’s retirement on a demanding and aggressive tone: “Stop making the next generation sick; retire Ronald and the rest of your junk food marketing to kids.”

McDonalds argues that the clown does not force children to pick certain foods, on the contrary, he promotes ideas of a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Plus, the meal for kids now contail apple dippers and low fat milk. “Ronald is an ambassador for good and delivers important messages to kids on safety, literacy and balanced, active lifestyles” says a statement from the fast food chain’s representatives.

Kim Cattrall Unveils Weight Loss Secret

The famous blonde diva who starred in Sex and the City has unveiled many secrets regarding a good sexual life, but now we find out she holds the secret to weight loss.

Access Hollywood has been interviewing her on her latest movie, “Meet Monica Velour” and has found out how the actress managed to lode the weight she had to gain for her stripper role.

Recently, Samantha Jones, who in real life is Kim Cattrall, was seen filming spots in Argentina for “I Can’t believe It’s Not Butter and has explained Access Hollywood how she managed to look to slim and fit after filming “Meet Monica velour. She was 20 pounds slimmer.

Kim told access Hollywood exactly what every woman would have said in her situation: “I found it so easy to put it on and so terribly hard to take it off”. She then admitted to a program that included exercise and diet.
She had to exercise a lot (we presume she did a lot of cardio in order to loose that extra pounds) and to eat right. There were no snacks included – none at all – and the meals were composed by healthy foods only. One of the secrets of eating the right healthy foods is that your appetite gets healthy, too. You yearn only for the proper amount of food. Then you brain tells you when you’re done eating.
One other secret of Kim Cattral’s weight loss plan is that she adopted a special diet: Eat Right For Your Blood type. It is a great diet and I’ve used that before.” She said she is the kind of dieter so she gets well with diets that either cut off the foods or they just let the at the person’s discretion, instead of minimizing the amounts. “I can’t have a little tiny bit of it because I want it all” Kim said.

In Meet Monica Velour she plays the role of a former porn star that is now a stripper. Now, that her days as PR maven Sam Jones are over, she said it was “nice to sort of embody somewhat of what of what Samantha’s about” when talking about her participation in the campaign “I Can’t Believe It’s No Butter. With that body, we can’t believe she’s not in her 30s!

Colin Farrell’s Son and Angelman Syndrome

Colin Farrell’s 7 year-old-son was diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome a few years ago, before turning 4. Colin says the diagnosis was first presumed by the doctors because of the child’s fascination with water.

The sexy Irish Hollywood star opened up about his son’s condition in October 2007 in an interview to Irish Independent.  He gave details on the condition and how they found out about it and he mentioned that he feels incredibly blessed to have him in his life.

On this Friday’s Ellen DeGeneres show, the actor told her that his son James is “kind of obsessed with water”. He mentioned that he is not a very good swimmer, but he loves to be in the water or around water. “It’s one of the characteristics of the condition that he has”.

The diagnosis was put by James’s doctor by accident. One day, the doctor saw him and the boy appeared to be in a very good mood. Maybe too good. So the doctor asked Farrell and the mother of the child, Kim Bordernave, if James is always that happy. They said yes. The next question was “And how does he feel about water?”  They said he was fascinated by it. It was after this confirmation that the doctor advised them to test the boy for Angelman Syndrome.

Angelman Syndrome (AS) is a condition that has no cure at present. It is a neuro-genetic disorder that has the following characteristics: delay in intellectual development, delay in physical development, sleep disturbance, seizures, hand flapping, smiling and laughing frequently, minimal use of speech, hyperactivity, attention deficit, sometimes strabismus, prominent mandible, flat back of the head, or smooth palms. The condition is caused by the erasure or inactivation of the chromosome 15 inherited from the mother, while the one inherited from the father, even if normal, is silenced.

People with AS are sometimes called angels, because of their generally happy innocent mood. Colin talks about his son like he was truly and angel. At the age of 4, when h took the first step, “there wasn’t a dry eye in the house” he said. Plus, he added that there isn’t much to spoil the boy’s good mood. “If James gets upset at home I can get a pot and put some water in it. It’s really beautiful because water is such a pure element.”

Why Skipping Breakfast Makes You Fat

Scientists have done some serious research on how the brain reacts when we skip breakfast and why fat accumulates in the body exactly when we try to lose weight.

If you are trying to lose weight you will probably find it easier to skip the first meal of the day. Being the first meal, the stomach isn’t asking for food yet, so you can trick your brain into skipping it more easily. Well, you couldn’t be more wrong. The trick is on you and more specifically on your body.  Not having breakfast makes your brain believe that, in fact, your need is to eat foods with more calorie intake.
A team of researchers at Imperia College London, United Kingdom, has started studying the way that our eating behavior influences the reward zone situated in the brain. For this, being a preliminary study, they gathered a group of 20 volunteers. The volunteers were healthy people at a normal weight. The experiment lasted just two day.

The first day, the volunteers were asked to skip breakfast the day of the experiment. The testing consisted in viewing some photos of a series of foods, some fattening, like pizza, French fries, cakes and chocolate, some healthy, like salads, fish and vegetables. During the exercise, the researchers analyzed they way their brain responded to the photos. The reward zone was highly active.

The second day, they were asked to do the same thing, except this time they were asked to have breakfast before the exercise. Their reward zone was analyzed this day, too, and it was noticed that the reward zone wasn’t as active as the day before.

Prof. Tony Goldstone, the endocrinologist who led the research, said that their results sustain the advice nutritionists give in regard with breakfast habits. When people skip meals, and especially breakfast, their brain changes the way it responses to food and sabotages the weight loss. More than that, it creates a good path for weight gain.

Scientists say that not only photos can trigger the reward zone in the brain, but also smells. The reward zone in the brain is a neural area that gets triggered when we feel frustrated for not satisfying other needs. At this point we, more or less conscientious, feel the need to compensate/ reward ourselves. This being said, if you have skipped breakfast and, on your way to work, pass by a pastry shop, chances are you are going to buy and eat more calories than you would have eaten on breakfast at home.

Chocolate and Red Wine Make You Smarter

Scientists have come to the conclusion the a limited amount of dark chocolate and red wine consumed together may actually be good for the brain, enhancing its capacities of resolving complex matters.

Recent studies led by a research team of experts at Northumbria University Medical School in North East of England. The starting theory was that polyphenols affect the brain’s capacity to function. And they wanted to check if it was true and how it happens. So they gathered a group of volunteers of different ages and intelligence state. They asked every participant to take a supplement of polyphenols found in wine and then they gave them a series of tests. In addition they did brain scans to all volunteers in order to see if there was any change at a neural level.

What they found out confirmed their suspicion: there is a connection between the level of polyphenols in the brain and the brain’s activity. Polyphenols increased the brain activity, pomping more blood into the vessels. This is how they work actually. They relax the blood vessels, making them wider and thus increasing their capacity. This way, blood runs faster through the veins and gets faster to the brain, as well. The relaxing of the vessels inside the brain not only increases the amount of blood in the head, by also the amount of oxygen and other nutrients, which are highly important to the brain.

Polyphenols can be taken as supplements, but they can also be found in some foods, among which there are the dark chocolate and the red wine. They work well separatey, but work even better when tasted together. Scientists warn,however, that a small quantity was all it took and that this shouldn’t be used as an excuse to overdrink or overeat.

The studies have shown that polyphenol consumption does not increase intelligence in young people as they seem to have the brain already working at full capacity. However, polyphenols helped widening their blood vessels in the brain, too. Instead, there have been differences registered in older people who seem to benefit more from eating chocolate and drinking wine.

In order to benefit from the health qualities of chocolare, choose ony the dark chocolate. Other typer do more damage to the body than good.And when it comes to wine, we know it’s fancy, we know it tastes good, but drink moderately and not every day.

Fat Liposuctioned From Hips Returns to Belly in One Year

Obesity experts say that the human body “defends” its fat storage. If you try to loose it, it will come back. But if you go under a liposuction procedure, the fat will not be restored in the same areas, as the surgery destroys the “scaffolding” infrastructure that holds fat in place, forcing the new fat to deposit on other areas. 

Now, this may look terrifying, especially for women who have put their trust into the idea of lipo. So lets sit down and explain.
According to Medical News Today, a team of experts from University of Colorado, Denver led by Drs Teri L. Hernandez and Robert H. Eckel started to gain interest in what happens after the liposuction: does the fat come back after being removed?

And if so, is it to the same place or elsewhere in the body?
So they gathered a group of volunteers which included 32 non obese healthy women that had a disproportionate body fat distribution.

They looked for women that had more fat on their lower abdomen, hips and thighs. Before the study they made a set of measurements including abdominal, leg and arm circumferences, thickness of subcutaneous skinfold, MRI scans of torso and thighs. Then the women were divided in two groups: the experimental group included 14 women that received a small volume liposuction; the control group of 18 women underwent the procedure after the experiment.

All the measurements were repeated 6 weeks, 6 months and 12 months. During this time, the volunteers were asked not to make any lifestyle changes. They had to avoid going on a diet, exercising less or more, receiving disturbing news as much as possible.
After one year, the measurements showed a rising in the percentage of fat in the abdominal area of the experimental group. In other words, the women who underwent lipo procedure on thighs and hips accumulated fat in the belly.
The interesting part was that the women in the control group, after seeing the proven results, still chose to undergo the procedure.
Physical education specialists, as well as plastic surgeons advice any clients to make the decision of remodeling their bodies after deciding upon a whole lifestyle change. There is no point in having liposuction if you don’t commit to daily exercise, eating healthier and avoiding stress as much as possible.
