Box champion Oscar De La Hoya recently confessed in an interview to Spanish-language network Univision that he has struggled with drug abuse, alcohol addiction and even thoughts of suicide for the past years. But he is now sober for over three months. The boxer is invited to the Piers Morgan Tonight on Wednesday evening, to talk about the problems he faced and how he managed to rise above them.
In a recent interview for Univision, de la Hoya said that he had hit rock bottom little time ago. “Rock bottom was recently. Within a couple of years, just thinking if my life was even worth it. I don’t have the strength, I don’t have the courage to take my own life but I was thinking about it”, he confessed.
Then, the box giant detailed his life with substance abuse. He said that at first it was only alcohol, but after a while, probably because it wasn’t enough anymore, he started taking drugs. “My drug of choice was cocaine and alcohol, hmm. Cocaine was recent. The last 2 years, last 2½ years and I depended more on the alcohol than the cocaine.” When explaining the reasons went ahead with it he said that the drugs took him “to a safe place”, where he felt safe. It took me to a place where I felt as if nobody can say anything to me. It took me to a place where I just can reach out and grab my mom”, he continued.
Oscar De La Hoya lost his mother in 1990. She passed away of breast cancer and he promised himself that before he retired, he would win an Olympic gold medal. Only two years after giving his word, he succeeded. He won the gold medal in 1992 in the Barcelona Olympic Games.
Fans of the boxer, who retired in 2009, can see him on Wednesday evening on Piers Morgan Tonight show. He and box fellow Victor Ortiz will talk about the problems in their lives and how they overcame the obstacles in their path.
