Who would have thought that we would discover a diamond planet in our galaxy? The astronomers have confirmed such a discovery in the Milky Way, just 4,000 light years from our beloved Earth. Does this mean diamonds price will drop now? Just a joke, ladies, apparently scientists don’t know what they are looking at, yet.
Reuters reports that astronomers have spotted a new planet in our solar system. New, in the sense that it wasn’t spotted before. According to Matthew Bailes of Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne and other colleagues in the field, the planet seems to be made of diamonds. Looking like a tiny star, the planet is in fact a big diamond, with a density far more high than that of any other planet’s in our solar system. This led to the conclusion that the carbon inside it must be crystalline, which again led to the conclusion that it is mostly diamond. “The evolutionary history and amazing density of the planet all suggest it is comprised of carbon — i.e. a massive diamond orbiting a neutron star every two hours in an orbit so tight it would fit inside our own Sun”, Bailes says.
The scientists in Australia, Britain and Hawaii have been monitoring the diamond planet since its discovery and Bailes says that they already have theories regarding its density and consistence. It has bit more mass than Jupiter, but is 20 times denser. It is probably what’s left from a star that has lost its outer layers. The big diamond does not contain light elements, such as helium and hydrogen. However, astronomers believe that due to its carbon consistence, the star is also likely to contain oxygen.
In terms of looks, the scientist can only speculate on its appearance, as Ben Stappers of the University of Manchester says. “I don’t imagine that a picture of a very shiny object is what we’re looking at here.”
So, ladies, dont’ rush to throw your diamond earrings away just yet!
