Last year’s most popular names in the U. S. came from the popular vampire movie Twilight. Since the first movie in the series, the big screen exploded with night creature stories (see the new version of Little Red Hood, that is, in fact the daughter of a werewolf). And let’s not talk about the small screen, with al the vampire series going.
The fact is that people love stories about vampires and love. There is something about their appearance (the fangs, the long hair, the clean cut wardrobe) and state (the fact that they drink blood, the isolation, the luxury) that drives women wild.
But if you were to bet on the vampires in 2010 you would have lost. It seems that Twilight put things into a new perspective: werewolves rule! Vampires? Not that much. The number one baby name given in 2010 was Jacob. The handsome young actor Taylor Lautner made the furry big bad wolf look hot! So hot, that it made sparking vampire Edward fade away.
In the baby girls name category, Bella (short from Isabella, Isabel, or Isabelle) has no competition. The character of Bella, played by Kristen Stewart, embodies the characteristics of the ideal woman: one that is seductive, in love, fragile but brave at the same time. No wonder both Jacob and Edward want her.
The Top 10 is occupied by other names in Twilight like Kellan. Only this time, the name is not the character’s, but the actor’s. Blond party boy Kellan Lutz plays Emmet Cullen, one of Edward’s brothers. Shouldn’t there be a team Kellan out there, somewhere, too? He is ranked #2, after all!
The 3rd spot comes to Knox, the name of one of Brangelina couples’ twins.
Among the first 10 most popular names, you can still find some classical ones, as well, like Ava and Emily for girls, and Michael and William for boys.
There are names that made a huge jump from mediocre positions to the top ones. The two baby boy and baby girl names that gained the most popularity last year was Maci and Bentley the names of a mother and son couple in the reality TV series Teen Mom.
With all these Hollywood moms in 2011, who know what the Top 10 will look like next year? Among the most unusual names give by now in 2011 are the names of Mariah’s twins: Moroccan (boy) and Monroe (girl). We have a feeling that if not Moroccan, Monroe will be embraced by many future moms.
